SUMMARY
The Permit Technician performs critical tasks as front-line personnel related to customer service and construction development. This includes reviewing, accepting, distributing, processing, documenting and maintaining departmental information, reports, plans, specifications, applications, permits and related inspections according to established guidelines. Permit Technicians also provide both organizational and technical support to the Building Inspection Division staff and other departments associated with permit issuance.
We are currently considering candidates in the San Francisco Bay Area, Sacramento, Fresno, and Orange in California.

RESPONSIBILITIES
- Works with minimal supervision while providing department support.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, jurisdiction staff and the public.
- Serves clients by greeting them with excellent customer service and referring them to the appropriate staff member and or educate customers on permit process when needed.
- Provides accurate and up to date information regarding permit process and permit activity.
- Distributes and reviews building permit applications for permit issuance according to dept procedures and legal requirements.
- Reviews blueprints, submissions and plans for completeness and compliance with basic code requirements.
- Verify structure plot plan, location on the lot, zoning and engineering requirements.
- Verify required setbacks and percentage of lot coverage.
- Responds to public inquiries regarding status of submitted projects and provides information.
- Computes mathematical, statistical and financial computations quickly and correctly, and or receives fees from Building Official, while ensuring appropriate fees are being charged based on jurisdictions adopted fees.
- Issues appropriate permits.
- Types reports, letters, utility releases, and a variety of other documents from rough draft or copy.
- Maintains and updates building permit applications log and plan checks being received by the Building Inspection Division.
- Generates and maintains accurate record keeping system for active building permits and tracking of all inspections performed on a particular permit.
- Prepares monthly invoices.
- Prepares monthly reports for Assessor’s Office, Building Standards.
- Operates standard office equipment including computers, and other related software.
- Perform other related duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Possess, or have the ability to obtain within six (6) month of hire, an International Code Council (ICC) Certification as a Permit Technician. All licenses and certificates must be maintained as a condition of employment.
- Minimum of two (2) years of experience in clerical involving public contact, preferably in building construction related; OR a minimum of one (1) year of experience in Permit Technician with a private or public agency.
- Possess a high school diploma or GED.
- Possession and maintenance of a valid Class “C” California driver’s license is required.
WORKING CONDITIONS
- Ability to deal effectively with difficult people with firmness and tact including people of diverse cultural backgrounds.
- Regularly requires sitting and standing for long periods of time; kneeling and squatting to retrieve materials, and lifting supply materials weighing up to 15 lbs.
- Maintain cooperative working relationships with all those contacted during course of work.
- Ability to communicate well, to be able to read requirements and to hear and understand people at the counter and on the telephone.
COMPENSATION
The compensation range for this position is $25/hr. – $35/hr.
