Purpose:
Directs all administrative and management activities for the Department of Neurology. Leads the administrative team in carrying out the day-to-day operations of the Department. Manages and directs strategic business and long range departmental planning activities for the Department of Neurology. Works with the Department Chair and management team to identify future direction for department growth and services. Creates action and business plans to meet established goals. Identifies the administrative structural changes necessary to achieve this strategic direction in a cost neutral manner.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Responsible for the Department’s ambulatory and inpatient structure which includes two ambulatory practice sites, 3 diagnostic testing laboratories (EMG, EEG, and EMU), 6 cost centers (incorporating clinical care, teaching, and research), 30 practicing physicians and 26 associate providers across the department, and supported by >75 practice/division/technical staff. The incumbent will directly supervise a practice manager who is responsible for effective and efficient clinical operations and also supervise several research scientists and research support group personnel.
2. Provides support in the development and implementation of annual budgets as well as longer range programmatic, financial, and operational plans.
3. Areas of oversight include quality improvement, personnel, space, supplies and equipment, departmental policies and procedures, and financial management.
4. Leads the research team in developing systems to support an academic department. Has management and financial oversight in the following areas: grants and contracts, residency program, clerkship and office of the chairman.
5. Work with appropriate leaders to implement strategies that support clinical excellence, growth, and efficiency that satisfies the needs of patients, referring physicians, and faculty.
6. Oversees initiatives and optimization activities focused on increasing patient access – in support of a more attainable and timely patient experience.
7. Maintains an in-depth knowledge of the changing health care environment and assesses regional market needs for clinical services. Monitors and evaluates the adequacy of existing clinical services and ensures the development of programs and services to respond to the market. Develops, supports, and manages programmatic initiatives for care improvement and cost reduction.
8. Recommends and develops strategies for general cost control and reductions, revenue enhancements, to include strategies for clinical cost accounting and productivity reporting/review.
9. Facilitates preparation of annual budget, staff salary planning, annual payroll, financial and strategic plans by advising divisions regarding information needed by the department to present a complete budget
10. Monitors activities, trains and mentors Clinical, Research and Support Administrators to ensure support and assistance as necessary for them to manage the clinical, research and administrative operations, finances and personal issues within their areas.
11. Possesses the managerial and leadership capabilities to promote professional autonomy and growth among all staff and provides an environment for medical and nursing collaboration for provision of efficient and effective patient care. Participates in other multidisciplinary teams to achieve and promote the organization's mission and goals.
12. Other duties as needed.
Minimum Qualifications:
✔ Bachelor’s degree with 10 years of experience in health care administration, preferably in the ambulatory care setting (or equivalent in education and experience) required.
✔ Master’s degree preferred.
✔ The ability to relate to and deal effectively with physicians, administrators, support staff and the general public with a high degree of tact and discretion essential.
✔ Excellent oral and writing skills required.
✔ Strong financial background required.
