The Senior Gear Engineer is responsible for providing leadership to the global gear engineering team. The main responsibilities of this position are to lead research and design activities on new products, quality issues, VAVE, and existing product enhancements opportunities. Primary duties include the following:
* Interpret customer technical specifications and use them to correctly design bevel gears, cylindrical gears, shafts, and splines to meet Dana design practices and Dana/customer performance requirements.
* Specify gear lab development timing, quality, and performance requirements.
* Provide technical support to customers, sales, purchasing, manufacturing plants, assembly plants, and other engineering departments during sourcing, vehicle development, launch, and production.
* Make key decisions on proposals, priorities, and requirements following Dana's Design Review process.
* Author and/or review DFMEAs and DVP&Rs and as well as participate in APQP and review gear deviations and PPAPs.
* Author and/or review technical reports, presentations, and gear product drawings.
* Author engineering work orders, materials, samples, and test lab service requests, and then approve gear lab and test lab set-ups and results.
* Mentor and train less experienced gear engineers and technicians.
* Review monthly customer vehicle warranty data and manage necessary actions for improvement.
* Perform benchmarking and competitive gear analyses. Develop and implement VAVE cost savings projects.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree, or foreign equivalent, in mechanical engineering or related technical field.
- 6 years of experience in bevel and/or cylindrical gear powertrain engineering in the automotive, commercial vehicle, or off-highway industries.
- 6 years of experience in gear design software (Gleason, Klingelnberg, or Romax preferred) and/or gear manufacturing and inspection.
- 3 years of experience making written and verbal technical presentations in English to management and/or customers.
- 3 years of experience in Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
- Must be a self-directed and motivated individual who is willing to accept responsibility.
- Solid verbal and written communication skills.
- Must have strong organization, team building, problem solving, planning, decision-making, and interpersonal skills.
- Travel domestically and internationally as needed based on business needs. Typical travel requirements are less than 15% and equally split between domestic and international.
