NOTE: Effective 12/18/22 there will be a salary increase and the new hourly pay range for this position will be: $28.19 - $29.99. The Henry Vilas Zoo is recruiting for a full-time (1.0 FTE) Janitor. DEFINITION
Under direct supervision, performs a range of cleaning and minor maintenance duties in keeping county facilities clean and operational; and related work as required.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Performs basic cleaning procedures including trash removal, cleaning waste receptacles, dusting, window and wall washing, furniture cleaning, dust mopping, wet mopping, vacuuming, and restroom cleaning in offices, meeting rooms, reception areas, and other county facilities as assigned; performs complex cleaning procedures including stripping, sealing, waxing, buffing corridors, various levels of carpet cleaning, and project cleaning as assigned; operates power equipment such as floor machines, automatic scrubber, carpet extractor; maintains outside building entrances, surrounding walks and grounds, including cutting grass and trimming shrubbery; assists with snow removal; assists in moving furniture and loading and unloading freight up to 50 lbs. alone and 100 lbs. assisted; may clean shop and industrial areas; performs minor maintenance duties including replacing light bulbs and checking operation of mechanical equipment.Education, Training and Experience:
Any combination of training and experience equivalent to the ability to read and write and one year of general janitorial experience including six months experience in a large commercial, healthcare or institutional setting.
Special Requirements:
Must have a valid driver’s license, or access to reliable personal transportation, or equivalent. Must successfully pass and maintain clearance through the Wisconsin Department of Health Services and the Dane County Sheriff’s Office background investigation which includes fingerprinting.

This position is active for the entire shift (standing, walking, stooping, twisting, lifting, bending, pushing, reaching, climbing, crouching and crawling). Must be able to lift 50 pounds unassisted and up to 100 pounds with assistance. May be required to operate heavy equipment, move furniture and work from safety ladders. Ability to use hands/feet for repetitive single grasping, fine manipulation, pushing and pulling and operating controls and equipment. Incumbent will work in all areas of the county and is therefore subject to a wide variety of conditions that will change daily. On a daily basis exposure to temperature variations or extremes, chemicals, odors, toxic agents, noise, vibrations, wetness, machinery and/or dust may cause discomfort but poses little risk of injury. On an infrequent basis, exposure to blood and/or body fluids.Knowledge of methods, materials, and equipment used in cleaning operations. Knowledge of, or ability to learn occupational hazards and safety precautions. Physical ability to operate power cleaning equipment. Ability to understand and carry out oral and written directions. Ability to make minor repairs to equipment and building fixtures. Ability to work well with others.
