What are the responsibilities and job description for the Advanced Academic Success Tutor position at Dartmouth College?
Position Purpose
The Advanced Academic Success Tutor works closely with supervising faculty and staff to support students in advanced courses to become more confident and independent learners, be successful in their coursework, and reach their goals. Tutors provide individual and/or small group tutoring to students in a range of subject areas, which varies based on student need. Tutors meet with students to clarify and review curricular concepts, explain processes needed for academic success, and help students solve problems specific to their coursework and/or overall academic skills (e.g., writing, quantitative, time management).
Required Qualifications
- MPH or MS required
- Successful completion of Geisel’s training modules on the science of learning, teaching and/or tutoring
- 3 years in a field that utilizes statistics (or combination of education and work experience)
- Advanced ability to demonstrate specific course-related software features for students, which may include Canvas, Zoom, Stata, Excel, RevMan, or EndNote. (Advanced proficiency required for PH141 & other upper level stats.)
- Demonstrates advanced knowledge of statistical course content in PH139, PH140, PH141, PH212 through satisfactory completion of course or equivalent course work or experience.
- Previous experience teaching, assistant teaching, tutoring or leading small learning communities.
- Computational and analytic proficiency in using, manipulating, and managing data using a statistical package (e.g. Stata).
- Demonstrated capability in design, implementation, interpretation, and communication of univariate and multivariable analysis of observational data
- Clear and capable communicator, including of analytic methods and findings through text, tables, and graphical elements
- Evident capability in critical and constructive evaluation of research designs and analytic plans
- Demonstrated strengths in problem solving, self-assessment, self-improvement, and lifelong learning.
- Consistently maintains a positive, patient, and encouraging attitude with students.
- Ability to provide tactful oral and written feedback.
- Ability to explain concepts and facilitate small group discussions.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office software, specifically Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality.
- Attention to detail.

Work with Students
o Create a professional and welcoming learning environment by respecting students’ diverse cultures, language skills, and experiences.
o Lead group tutoring sessions and/or small group learning communities review sessions on challenging academic material.
o Plan, prepare, and deliver session plans that facilitate active learning using evidence-based pedagogical methods.
o Provide student assistance through tutoring and coaching using statistical skills learned in previous work related setting or course work.
o Determine student needs and monitor progress through listening and questioning strategies as the primary method.
o Coach students using feedback and reflection to improve students’ knowledge, understanding, and capable application of statistics in a way that takes advantage of the tutor’s statistical knowledge, capabilities, and experience on a plane well beyond student learners.
o Iteratively design practice problems and exercises matched to a student’s level of understanding and needs exhibited.
o Demonstrate and provide guidance on conceptual approach, analytic strategies, application frameworks, and statistical program design as indicated to enable students to become confident, successful, self-directed learners.
o Differentiate student support depending on knowledge and skill level using multiple learning modalities.
o Foster students’ independence in statistical regression capabilities and advanced STATA software programming and interpretation.
o Available to commit to regularly scheduled 1-hour sessions weekly (or as needed) on evenings and/or weekends

o Document and collect program data on tutoring targets, activities, accomplishments and challenges.
o Meet with TDI Program Managers and the Office of Learning Support (OLS) to integrate with systems of student support.
o Make appropriate referrals to other campus and community resources as needed in a manner integrated with OLS.
o Participate in Geisel/TDI professional development and training activities to improve skills
