What are the responsibilities and job description for the Tree Climber Apprentice Program position at Default Brand?
Our Climber-In-Training Apprentice Program is designed to give you the opportunity for an intensive and interactive training journey to join the climbing team at SavATree. This is a full-time position with full benefits.
You will start in a 60–90-day trial period as a Groundsperson at your home branch (trial time may vary based on timing of next cohort).
As a Groundsperson you will learn about the following topics:
- Proper Protection Equipment (PPE)
- Tree Removal
- Equipment Operation
- Pruning Practices
- Job Hazard Analysis
- Climbing & Equipment Safety
- Cable & Bracing
- Inventory Assessment
- Problem Identification
Once endorsed by your Branch leadership, you will then qualify to enroll in our Climber-In-Training Apprentice Program.
You will join our Regional and District GTC Trainers and other regional apprentices for a 2-week off-site, all-expenses paid, training experience where you will learn about the following topics:
Chainsaw Safety and Precision Felling
- Chainsaw Operation Best Practices
- Chainsaw Sharpening and Maintenance
- Limbing and Bucking
- The 5 Step Felling Plan
- Use of Pull lines, and Mechanical Advantage
- Correct use of Felling Wedges
Climbing
- Knot Tying for Climbing Applications
- SRS and MRS Ascent Techniques
- Use of the Work Positioning Lanyard
- Canopy Anchors and Friction Management
- Work Positioning and Limb Walking
- Hardware Interface and Configurations
- MRS and SRS Climbing techniques.
- Spur Climbing for Tree Removals
- Positioning and Methods for Building Spar Tie Ins
- Best Practices while Cutting Aloft
Rigging
- Knot Tying for Rigging Applications
- Forces and Potential Forces in a Rigging System
- Rated and Real Equipment Strengths
- Rope and Hardware Selection
- Aerial Lift Equipment Familiarization
- Friction Management and Lowering Devices
- Positive Rigging
- Negative Rigging
EHAP and Aerial Rescue
- EHAP Certification

Once you graduate from the training, you will then be placed back at your home Branch as a SavATree climber. You will be able to continue to progress through our SDAP (Self-Development Advancement Program) that will enable you to increase your compensation as you increase your skillset in Tree Care.
What a day in the life is like as a GTC climber:
As a climber you will work outside and visit beautiful properties in the community and apply your knowledge and expertise in climbing, pruning, and safety to ensure the health and well-being of each client’s landscape.
Daily focus is working together on a General Tree Care crew to provide high quality tree care to our clients. The Tree Care Team is involved in all aspects of pruning, removals, cable bracing and other concepts related to tree care. Team members are able to safely operate all equipment and perform the assigned job tasks while also providing excellent service to our clients.
What kind of person are we looking for? Someone with:
- A desire to learn about trees, climbing and safety techniques.
- A great attitude and work ethic.
- A desire to pursue a career in Arboriculture.
- A desire to work outdoors.
- Valid U.S. driver's license to operate company vehicles.
- Must be authorized to work lawfully in the U.S.
- Ability to lift 50lbs and operate basic equipment.
Compensation starts at $18 to $23 an hour based on location and previous experience with the opportunity to increase your pay as you graduate the program and advance your skillset.
