Title: Interpreter for the Deaf
Under general supervision, facilitates communication between Deaf and/or Hard of Hearing students and staff, administrators, and parents by interpreting spoken language using American Sign Language (ASL) and transliterating spoken English into signed English.
Essential Functions:
The following duties are representative of this position. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.
- Facilitates communication among Deaf and Hard of Hearing students and their hearing peers, mainstream classroom teachers, and other personnel in the school system using American Sign Language and spoken English.
- Provides instructional support to students in their classroom settings.
- Attends field trips and various school system meetings including Parent Teacher Association (PTA), action team, Individualized Education Plan (IEP), and other approved activities or meetings to provide interpreting services.
- Performs ongoing maintenance of current credentials and provides evidence to the Local Education Agency (LEA), as requested.
- Remains current in the field of educational interpreting through participation in workshops, professional meetings, interaction with professional colleagues, and reading of current literature in the field.
- Educates consumers on deafness/hearing loss, as needed.
- Maintains an impartial attitude and ensures confidentiality in accordance with the Registry of Interpreters of the Deaf (RID) Code of Ethics.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Must hold a valid certification in interpretation through the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) or an assessment score of 3.5 or higher on the Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA).
- Must be eligible for a Georgia Professional Standards Commission Clearance Certificate.
- Must pass the GACE Educator Ethics test.
LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS
- Hold a valid certification through the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID)
or
- Pass the Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) at level 3.5 or higher within five (5) years preceding the date of application and hold a bachelor’s degree or higher in any field from a Georgia Professional Standards Commission approved accredited college or university. If the degree requirement is not met, an initial five (5)-year license may be considered and the degree requirement must be met for renewal and continued employment.
