ACADEMIC INSTRUCTOR (MATH)

The Academic Instructor position provides instructional support for a U.S Department of Labor Job Corps contractor, Human Learning Systems. The Job Corps program is a federally funded residential training program. Job Corps’ mission is to educate and train youth ages 16 -24 for successful careers in the nation’s fastest-growing industries.
Summary of Duties: Plan, prepare, and provide meaningful instruction related to individual student learning goals and objectives.
Key Areas of Responsibility:

Utilizes a variety of assessment tools and analyzes student data to develop individualized instruction .

Description of Duties:
Promotes an atmosphere within the classroom/training environment that is positive, safe, and conducive to learning, maximizing student motivation and outcomes.
Maintains a high degree of effective behavior management within the training area.
Continues to stay current on new teaching, instruction, and facilitation techniques.
Maintains a safe, clean, and clutter-free work environment.
Utilizes Job Corps guidelines and subject course guides to develop an accurate syllabus for the course and lesson plans.
Conducts assessments to diagnose areas of difficulty; prescribe individual plans.
Identifies appropriate materials and designs instruction to meet individual student needs by developing curriculum aligned with trade certifications and academics tests (TABE, HSE, HSD).
Designs curriculum to ensure students obtain their academic and career technical training goals aligned with their MyPACE Career Plan.
Identify and prepare potential students for the ACT and AT programs and refer students to the ACT/AT coordinator for application, enrollment, and financial aid.
Conducts Pre ACT courses as required.
Implements an Applied Academics program: Meets with Career Technical Training instructors to identify trade related skills and projects that can be taught and reinforced in an academic setting integrating technical instruction to reading, writing, math, and employability skills.
Meets with student and CTT instructor to identify and create required accommodations for student’s capabilities.
Meets with disability accommodations team to review accommodations and make recommendations for changes or modifications to accommodations.
Obtains outside resources as needed for accommodations for students.
Maintains accurate record keeping: Records daily attendance, submits ESPs in a timely manner, document student progress for inclusion on the ETA 640 profile.
Documents student’s progress in case notes at least monthly, utilizing the RAP method.
Develops curriculum aligned to the center, HLS, and DOL goals. Maintain a lesson plans binder and prepares lesson plans at least two weeks in advance.
Submits necessary schedule change information.
Documents student achievements on the Pathway Achievement Record (PAR) and distributes, as necessary.
PROVIDE EFFECTIVE INSTRUCTION

PROVIDE EFFECTIVE CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT
• Effectively and consistently enforce rules and follow procedures
• Utilize intervention strategies with students to promote positive behaviors
• Redirect students naturally and immediately without disrupting others
• Be organized and have all materials, equipment, etc., ready for immediate use
• Carry out smooth and effective transitions (e.g., from one activity to another, as students enter and leave the classroom)
• Establish appropriate classroom rules and procedures that are clearly understood by all students

Monitor Student’s Behavior: Reinforce proper conduct of students in all areas. Assists staff with behavior problems coordinating interventions or referrals to PBSO as required. Creates methods and programs to motivate constructive student behavior. Maintains awareness of the individual needs of various minority and cultural groups. Monitors accountability process.
Develops Students: Establishes a high level of mutual trust and support with others. Expresses positive expectations of others, even in difficult situations. Creates a learning atmosphere that encourages performance improvement. Provides timely coaching to build student success, by identifying barriers, recognizing improvements, and developing plans for growth (student committees, leadership, higher education).
Teamwork: Builds pride and commitment though effective teamwork and collaboration. Adheres to established company policies and procedures and supports all programs. Makes effective use of time, materials, and resources by planning, scheduling, and organizing work.

Career Management Team (CMT): Members contribute to the success of students by actively participating in the CMT process. The CMT is responsible for students’ successful matriculation through the Job Corps program, beginning in Career Preparation Phase (CPP) and continuing throughout Career Transition Phase (CTP). In the Career Development Phase (CDP) the CMT supports students as they earn, TABE gains, HSE/HSD, certifications, and trade completions. When students move to CTP and separate from the program, the CMT supports graduates in placement within 12 months. Former enrollees receive placement services within 3 months. Both have 15 months for the Q2/Q4 post placement survey. CMT is responsible to ensure that the following areas are supported within each CMT: OMS Report Card, CTT OMS, Projected Separations, High School Equivalency, CTT completion, CTT Industry Credential, Literacy and Numeracy TABE, Evaluation of Student Progress, MyPACE, PAR, WBL, Career Transitions Readiness, CSS, Employability Skills, Contextual Learning, Career Transitions/Career.
Workplace Standards: Maintains required certifications and/or licenses including a valid driver’s license and insurance when required by position. Does not engage in activities other than official business during working hours. Reports significant/major incidents or accidents. Cooperates in external/internal investigations as requested. Completes PRH, Corporate and Center training as required and demonstrates competencies accordingly in compliance with DOL, Corporate and Center guidelines.
Credentials, Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree required.
Teaching certification in the state of employment.
