Do you like to stay busy, work hard and enjoy the great outdoors? If so, you may want to apply with the Plant Protection & Conservation Program Area, Insect Survey Laborer position.
As a Laborer (Insect Survey) , you will primarily focus on the Japanese beetle eradication to help ensure a successful eradication project. While working on the Japanese beetle eradication you will typically spend the entire day outside, walking upwards of eight miles a day, at the active Japanese beetle eradication zone while working with contractors that are treating infested yards. This position has frequent interaction with the public, knocks on doors, places door hangers, maintains public relations, answer questions, and educates the public on the Japanese beetle eradication project.
After eradication wraps up, these positions join the rest of the field office to help place, maintain, and collect insect survey traps. While making frequent contact with the residents, landowners, grounds keepers, etc. to obtain permission before placing traps and retrieving the traps. You will need to keep an accurate account of all traps and information including precise trap location, servicing dates, removal dates, hosts surveyed, pest detection made, and you will enter trap placement data through software on a state issued iPhone. Overnight travel may occur to help place traps throughout the Eugene Field office Territory or for assistance in another field office.
The Laborer (Insect Survey) is a seasonal part-time position that is based out of the Portland Field Office located in Beaverton. The Japanese beetle eradication is primarily located in Washington County and covers part of Clackamas and Multnomah Counties. This recruitment will be used to establish a list of qualified applicants to fill the current vacancy. This position will start March 14, 2022, and the season is anticipated to conclude October 14, 2022, and this position is represented by the Service Employees International Union (SEIU).

As a member of the ODA team, you will help provides an accurate, unbiased inspection of fruits and vegetables, phytosanitary certification, shipping point inspection, third party grading of raw product for processing and export certification and licenses-controlled atmosphere storage facilities for factors affecting the marketability and export of fresh and processed fruits, vegetables and nuts for the fresh and processing industry and consuming public.
Working conditions

Must be able to walk upwards of 5-8 miles a day
Operate assigned state vehicle
Must display a good sense of diplomacy when dealing with the public
Able to navigate using paper and electronic maps and plan efficient daily work routes
May need to cold call landowners, industry professionals, and other entities to conduct work with eradication and biological control teams or secure trap locations on private properties
May be required to pass a background check and/or complete specialized safety and access training for specific work sites, such as access to secured locations in the territory
