Help the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife fulfill its mission: To protect and enhance Oregon's fish and wildlife and their habitats for use and enjoyment by present and future generations. Locations: Positions are with the Ocean Sampling Project out of Oregon coastal ports including Astoria, Garibaldi, Pacific City, Depoe Bay, Newport, Florence, Winchester Bay, Charleston, Bandon, Gold Beach, and Brookings. Anticipated Duration: Anticipated start dates include March 1, March 12, April 25, and June 12, 2023. End dates vary by position and are forecasted for September 30 and October 31, 2023. Please note that “apply by dates” also vary to correspond to start dates. NOTE: This recruitment will be opened until filled with the first review of applications beginning at 8AM on Friday, January 27, 2023 for positions starting in March. Additional review dates are expected on March 10 for positions starting in late April, and May 5 for positions starting in mid-June. More information on the Ocean Sampling Project can be found at https://dfw.state.or.us/MRP/salmon/index.asp Job Description: What you will do: Port samplers conduct field interviews with recreational and/or commercial fishers and conduct recreational fishery effort counts. Employees are expected to handle and collect data and samples from a variety of fish species; learn proper identification of common marine fishes; and accurately record and summarize field data from interviews and biological sampling. Lifting of fish and equipment up to 50 pounds is required. Employees are expected to effectively communicate with anglers, commercial fishers, and the general public on a daily basis. All jobs entail working outdoors in exposed locations, at times during inclement weather conditions, and require walking up and down boat ramps and docks, on sandy beaches, and between fish buying stations. Most positions will require the use of digital video recording equipment to monitor fishing vessel activity. Some driving between workstations is required. Employees will need to provide transportation and proof of auto insurance. Vehicle mileage while working will be reimbursed. These positions require a flexible work schedule that varies in the number of hours worked on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day, or a work schedule in which the starting and stopping times vary on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day, and days off may vary between weeks. Requirements/Requested Skills: Minimum qualifications are not established for these positions; however, we are seeking applicants with the following related skills and experience: conducting creel surveys, commercial fishery sampling/observing, identifying marine fish species, collecting and accurately recording field data, computer skills, and customer service, and who possess or are in pursuit of a Fisheries or Wildlife Science degree or related degree in the biological/ecological sciences. Driving is required for all positions. Out-of-state finalists will be required to present a current certified or uncertified driving record for review to be considered for the position.
