What are the responsibilities and job description for the Epidemiologist position at Department of Health?
This position is located in the District of Columbia Government (District), DC Health (DOH), Center for Policy, Planning, and Evaluation (CPPE), Research, Measurement and Evaluation(REM)/Division of Epidemiology. The incumbent will serve as the Cross-Cutting Epidemiologist under the purview of the State Epidemiologist and will work closely with program areas within the Office of Epidemiology, DC Health, and the DC Public Health Lab.
Major Duties and Responsibilities
The incumbent will be responsible to monitor and evaluate the timeliness, completeness, and quality of data collected through surveillance activities. They will also be responsible to: collaborate with other CPPE staff and external partners in efforts to ensure compliance with all data reporting and collection standards as outlined in organizational, local, and federal guidelines, policies, and/or regulations. They will also collaborate with public safety and prevention partners to enhance injury surveillance.
The incumbent will provide primary data management support for software applications utilized by the Division of Epidemiology for injury surveillance activities including, but not limited to Syndromic Surveillance (ESSENCE), the DC Violent Death Reporting System, DC Firearm Surveillance Through the Emergency Room (FASTER) and SUDORS (State Unintentional Drug Overdose). They will identify strategies for improving and/or enhancing injury surveillance data collection, management, and analysis processes. They will also be responsible for the completion of tasks related to the development of analytic datasets (e.g., data extraction, data cleaning, and variable coding).
The incumbent will develop, plan and implement the strategies necessary to coordinate, conduct and provide assistance on surveillance, epidemiologic studies and investigations associated with injury surveillance. They will also select and use the appropriate data collection techniques and statistical analysis methods in conducting epidemiological studies. They will produce written products related to the scientific work of the position such as: study proposals, project plans, scientific and technical papers, grants, publications, and reports, professional journal articles, etc.
The incumbent will represent the Department of Health at conferences and meetings. Attends conferences, workshops, training, etc., to enhance personal and professional growth. They will develops and prepares abstracts and reports for presentation or publications. They will provide analytic support on grant-related activities including data analysis and program evaluation, and perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications and Education
Individuals must possess at least one (1) year of specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade (12) level in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Specialized experience is defined as experience that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled, and has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled.
Bachelor’s or graduate/higher level degree: major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of the position. This degree must be from an educational program from an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education(external link) at the time the degree was obtained.

The incumbent must be able to carry out official duties in a variety of settings and conditions. Routine work will occur primarily in an office setting.
