Duty Schedule:

Monday through Friday, 8:00AM to 5:00PM; possibly some evenings and/or weekend hours may be required.

Summary/Objective of Position:

The Academic Advisor is responsible for working with all students to help them meet the requirements to graduate and earn their desired degree. The Advisor will help students pick a potential career path, recommending courses for students to take and staying updated on course requirements. The Advisor must have a thorough understanding of the various degree programs and the necessary classes for those program; provide a holistic academic advising approach to promote and increase good academic standing, persistence, retention, graduation, and transfer or continuation into the Bachelors degree programs. The Advisor will consider students' academic needs, goals, interests, and educational experiences to determine the best educational/degree plan to support academic success. This position requires innovation, initiative, a positive attitude and motivation to advise all students in a supportive environment.


Description of Essential Functions of the Position:

ACADEMIC ADVISING AND COACHING

- To provide guidance with all students regularly to review degree progress and graduation requirements.
- To review career goals with students and help them follow the proper degree track to reach their educational goals.
- To provide individual and/or group advising services to new, transferring and continuing students including students w/ disabilities.
- To maintain dialogue with advisees from early registration, first-week of instructions, mid-term, and throughout the semester to track academic success, retention, and persistence leading to good academic standing from one-semester to the next.
- To provide a hub of information to share with students re: admissions, registration, financial aid, residence life, and other support services offered under the Student Affairs programs.


STUDENT SUPPORT
- To review placements tests with students to ensure they are fulfilling requirements and are placed in the proper classes or programs.
- To provide support to all students during the registration process with course selection, registration, drop/add course(s), and complete the withdrawal form when appropriate.
- To provide guidance and support with all students to maintain academic success, retention, persistence, continuous enrollment, and leading to graduation.
- To collaborate with faculty and support staff to identify needs for interventions re: tutoring, referral to support services, i.e. mental wellness to ensure academic success.
- To provide a supported learning environment for all students from multicultural and diverse backgrounds including students with disabilities to adjust to college life.


CAMPUS NETWORK

- To understand and guide students with the AZ GEC/Grade Equivalency Courses, (A, B, and C); other transfer requirements to ensure a smooth transition to and from four-year colleges/universities.
- To provide input with the development of advising policies, processes, and programs that will promote a sound academic advising services.
- To promote the Academic Advising Program with the development of brochures/pamphlets and using the social media platform for outreach activities/services.
- To collaborate and coordinate workshops to meet retention and outreach efforts with all programs under the Student Affairs.


DATA REQUESTS AND REPORTS

- To monitor students' academic progress reports, document notes, and records using electronic database file systems, (i.e., Jenzabar EX, ConexED and other software).
- To conducts surveys and focus group studies to assess the effectiveness and quality of the student advisement process and services.
- To compile data and reports to meet the needs of the programs' reporting needs in a timely manner.


QUALIFICATIONS

Education & Experience


Minimum:

BA/BS Degree in Psychology, Counseling, Social Work, Education, and/or related field, plus a minimum of two years of academic advising and/or coaching in higher education setting.

Preferred:

MA/MS Degree in Counseling, Social Work, Education, and/or related experiences preferred.


Knowledge:

- Knowledgeable with FERPA, ADA, and other policies to demonstrate understanding; student confidentiality.
- Demonstrated knowledge with the career pathways and degree programs the students are pursuing.
- Demonstrated knowledge with reviewing degree checklists; accessing the AGEC requirements for transfer, and encourages students to use the AZ Transfer link/site to find course equivalency to plan their transfer to and from other colleges and universities.
- Knowledgeable in using basic office technology (i.e. desktop computer, laptop, copier, and scanner); use of social platforms to conduct advising, video conference, and workshops.

Skills:

- Effective communication skills to regularly reach out to all students and to identify and learn about academic needs and goals.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills to help all students read, interpret, and select course as outlined in degree checklists.
- Proficiency in using Microsoft Office suites and document student information using a variety of data systems, (i.e. Jenzabar Ex, ConexED and other software).
- Demonstrated strong analytical, conflict resolution, and leadership skills; pay attention to details; and exemplifies strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.

Abilities:

- Possesses positive and encouraging attitude to motivate students to succeed and advance in their educational careers.
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate with other programs to plan, facilitate and host workshops to ensure academic success of all students.
- Demonstrated ability to identify students' needs for support services, complete appropriate referrals seeking academic and/or personal adjustments to succeed academically leading to retention and persistence; maintain continuous enrollment.
- Demonstrated ability to navigate and use social media platform, (i.e. Facebook) for advising, outreach, and retention efforts; use sound judgment in chosen media platform by ensuring safety and confidentiality.

Physical Requirements, Work Environment & Travel:

Work is performed in an office environment. Moderate physical exertion. Occasional lifting of boxes, supplies, and equipment which may weigh up to 50 pounds.

Other Requirement(s):

Possess a valid state issued Driver's License. Complete Highway Safety training to operate college/government vehicles. Attend/complete First Aid & CRP training.
