General Description
The purpose of this job is to lead a small mobile crew in a variety of grounds maintenance assignments including athletic fields.
This position works under general supervision, independently developing work methods and sequences.
Duties and Responsibilities
The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this position. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the position as necessary.
- Leads small, mobile grass cutting crews to various county sites.
- Trains and oversees assigned staff for the purpose of providing work direction and/or ensuring tasks are completed.
- Identifies and inspects various county sites in order to formulate work plan for the mobile crew.
- Operates small engine equipment including mowers, bush hogs, weed eaters, and hand blowers.
- Cares for established lawns by mulching, aerating, weeding, trimming, or edging around flower beds, walks, or walls.
- Prunes or trims trees, shrubs, or hedges using shears or pruners.
- Loads, transports, and unloads equipment and materials.
- Maintains fluids in trucks, tractors, mowers, and other grounds maintenance equipment.
- Performs minor repairs and maintenance procedures on grounds maintenance equipment.
- Plants and transplants trees, shrubs, and flowers.
- Assists in inventory control.
- May perform athletic field maintenance, including but not limited to field marking, safety inspections, and turf repair.
- May clean gutters, culverts and other drainage structures; assist with maintenance and repair of irrigation systems.
- May assist with custodial cleaning of park facilities to include restrooms.
- May assist with special events county wide, including but not limited to tournaments at the Sports Complex and County Fair.
- Performs related work as required.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Requires High School graduation or GED equivalent supplemented by experience in ground operations maintenance or related experience.
Physical Demands
Performs heavy work that involves constantly lifting, shoveling, and carrying 35 to 50 pounds on a regular and recurring basis and exerting 100 pounds of force on an occasional basis.

- Bright/dim light; Dusts and pollen.
- Extreme heat and/or cold; Wet or humid conditions.
- Extreme noise levels, Animals/wildlife.
- Vibration; Fumes and/or noxious odors.

- Electrical shock; Heights.
Special Certifications and Licenses
Must possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license with an acceptable driving history.
