Teacher – Child Care JOB DESCRIPTION - OR
Overview:
The Teacher – Child Care is responsible for supporting the Head Teacher with all children in the classroom. In addition, this position continually supports the company’s mission to provide a safe, diverse, enthusiastic & inclusive learning environment, where the number one focus is meeting the individual needs of each child, while providing support for our families.
Classification: Full-Time or Part-Time; Non-Exempt
Reports to: Head Teacher
Primary Duties
- Child Supervision and Interaction
- Interacts with the children in a friendly, respectful and nurturing manner.
- Supports the social and emotional development of the children.
- Follows all state childcare licensing and other agency regulations in regard to staff/child ratios, group sizes, interactions, safety and security procedures.
- Maintains records and reports on each child including attendance as requested.
- Applies strategies as needed to deal appropriately and effectively with guiding behaviors to meet the needs of all children.
- Communications effectively to ensure that children know what is expected; including classroom rules, safety rules, behavior expectations, and daily routines.
- Promotes a positive, learning environment where all children have the opportunity to practice new skills.
- Communicates directly and age appropriately with each child at their level.
- Actively engages with children during activities and routines.
- Provides meal/snack experiences that are developmentally appropriate and a pleasant social atmosphere.
- Encourages children to communicate and use language to develop reasoning skills.
- Talks with children about ideas related to their development, learning and play.
- Health and Safety
- Attends to the personal hygiene of each child in care, including changing diapers, soiled clothing and hand washing.
- Maintains a safe environment based on safety standards.
- Helps other staff in preparing meals for children as required.
- Assists in the cleaning and straightening up of childcare classrooms morning, midday and at the end of the day as well as putting away any outside equipment.
- Sanitizes, deep clean toys and classroom routinely as requested.
- Enforces screen time policies and limits.
- Family and Staff Relationships
- Works cooperatively and effectively as a team member by communicating and contributing information with families, as requested.
- Fosters a sense of community in the classroom.
- Curriculum and Classroom Environment
- Implements the center's program of activities for their assigned age group or groups as requested.
- Must be flexible and adaptable to meet the needs of the children and program.
- Supports a classroom environment that is appropriate to the physical, social, and emotional development of the children.
- Supports the Head Teacher in creating an attractive, clean, fresh, inviting and organized classroom that showcases children’s learning.
- Implements a daily schedule providing a balance of activities; quiet/active, indoor/outdoor, etc.
- Promotes and supports DAP language and literacy experiences.
- Utilizes strategies to effectively support children during classroom transitions.
- Supports the implementation of a DAP group time; engaging in educational as well as informal interactions.
- Adapts, modifies, or accommodates activities, environment, and interactions to meet the needs of all children as requested.
- Other Responsibilities
- Continues professional development and maintains required certifications; attending workshops, trainings and conferences and other staff development.
- Relates to other staff members with courtesy, respect, and acceptance.
- Demonstrates interpersonal skills to establish and maintain effective relationships.
- Shows ability to communicate well; maintaining confidentiality and discretion.
- Receives constructive feedback with a willingness to improve.

EDUCATION AND JOB REQUIREMENTS
Education:
Have the qualifications experience/education for the age group as noted in the Oregon Child Care Center Licensing regulations.
Physical Demands and Work Environment:
- Ability to routinely lift children, (50 pounds), move furniture in classrooms.
- Ability to sustain long hours of active work.
- Ability to react quickly.
- Ability to kneel, bend, crouch.
Other Job Requirements:
- Must be registered with Oregon’s Central Background Registry.
- Must enjoy working with and be sensitive to the needs of children and families.
- Must maintain any current education licensing.
- Participates in Continuous Quality Improvement development.
Mental Requirements of the Job:
Continual interaction with co-workers, parents, and children. Must relate positively to children and adults. Frequently faces deadlines with attention to detail and must complete tasks in a timely manner. Considerable amount of variable levels of concentration with frequent or constant interruptions. Must be able to handle multi-faceted tasks. The nature of this position requires absolute confidentiality. Any information, either written or verbal, must be contained and handled in a confidential manner.
