TITLE: Director of English/Reading for the Braintree Public Schools (K-12th grade)
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Massachusetts licensure as an English teacher
- Massachusetts licensure as a Supervisor/Director
- A Masters degree in English
- At least 5 years successful experience as a teacher in English curricular area
- Demonstrated knowledge in the teaching of Reading required
- Such alternatives to #3 and #4 above as the School Committee may find appropriate and acceptable.
REPORTS TO: Assistant Superintendent of Schools
JOB GOAL:
To provide leadership in the development, implementation, coordination, and innovation of the English curricular area for the school system.
To achieve and maintain standards of excellence in teaching in the English curricular area so that each student exposed to English studies may derive the greatest academic and personal benefit from the learning experience.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
A. Supervision:
- Assists in determining personnel needs and in recruiting and selecting staff.
- Supervises and evaluates reading specialists and subject-matter teachers at the 6-12 level through classroom visits, personal conferences, and written reports.
- Makes class assignments of teachers subject to the approval of the Principals.
- Conducts orientation, department meetings, and in-service training for teachers.
B. Curriculum:
- Provides leadership for the creation, development, implementation, revision, and evaluation of curriculum.
- Coordinates a sequential curriculum of concepts and information for grades K-12.
- Keeps informed about all new developments in English and disseminates information about them regularly to the teachers in the English curricular area.
- Directs all matters pertaining to the textbook selections for the system through the use of faculty committees, examinations, usage of auxiliary teaching materials and the like, within the English curricular area.
- Where applicable, evaluates student achievement in English curricular area on a system-wide basis each year and recommends such changes or adjustments in the curriculum as seem advisable.
- Where applicable, interprets results of standardized tests and recommends appropriate use of such examinations.
- Attends curriculum and other professional conferences.
- Devises experimental programs designed to improve the curriculum and instructional techniques.
- Leads, organizes, and directs workshops and teacher coaching.
C. Administration:
- Relationship with students, parents, counselors
- Responsible for guidelines for placement of students in appropriate courses, assists teachers and counselors in actual placement, and confers with parents.
- Assists in interpreting Braintree's instructional program to students, counselors, parents, and the community.
2. Textbooks, equipment, materials, supplies
- Prepares the budget for the department
- Submits requisitions, prepares bid specifications, and allocates materials and supplies
- Oversees the department's supply, textbook, and equipment needs.
- Maintains an inventory for the department
3. Other Responsibilities
- Selects, assigns, and oversees all student teachers at the secondary level.
- Prepares special projects/grants
- Supervises co-curricular activities sponsored by the department
- Acts as a clearinghouse for field trips
- Disseminates information to the news media
- Serves on various system-wide committees
- Performs other duties as may be assigned.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: School Year Four Weeks. Salary and working conditions as negotiated between the Braintree School Committee and the Braintree Education Association.
EVALUATION: In accordance with the provisions of the Committee’s policy on Evaluation of Administrative personnel or in accordance with existing contract.
