Community Organizer

Dollar For
Louisville, KY Full Time
POSTED ON 4/2/2024 CLOSED ON 4/30/2024

What are the responsibilities and job description for the Community Organizer position at Dollar For?

Dollar For seeks a compassionate, energetic, and equity-focused community organizer based in Louisville, KY to join our programs team as a part-time contractor.

Dollar For helps patients navigate hospital charity care programs to crush medical debt. Community organizers serve as the front line workers to build community partnerships and educate patients about financial assistance programs and Dollar For’s services. Given that medical debt is most significant among Black and brown communities, we anticipate that this community organizer’s work will focus in the portions of the city and surrounding counties where lower-income, Black, and brown residents are concentrated.

Dollar For is a small and growing non-profit. We seek to build a team of employees who want opportunities to grow and stretch with us over time. We commit to being a place you truly enjoy working with a culture where everyone celebrates the successes, gives and offers supportive feedback, and works together to solve problems and help patients.

Responsibilities

  • Meet with service organizations, medical clinics, and other groups to build referral partnerships.
  • Attend and speak at public events and fairs to directly educate patients about charity care.
  • Explore creative methods for making patients in Louisville aware of charity care and Dollar For.
  • Coordinate with local volunteers, including college students, to maximize awareness efforts.
  • Participate in strategy planning on ways to further engage and educate patients.
  • Contribute to the development of tools for future community organizers.

Requirements

  • Proven experience with community organizing and building relationships within the Louisville community.
  • Ability to empathize and understand the challenges and opportunities that people facing medical debt face.
  • Clear commitment to equity in all community organizing work, including co-creation and co-leadership with people most impacted by medical debt.
  • Written and verbal communication skills to easily interact with community leaders, organizers, and residents.
  • Know your way around programs like Slack, Google Drive and Gmail.
  • Critical thinking and decision making to plan the best course of action for their clients.
  • Previous work and personal experience with disadvantaged/marginalized communities in Louisville and/or personal experience with medical debt or charity care is a huge plus!

Pay, Perks and Benefits

  • $25/hour for up to 40 hours of work per month. The position is funded for up to one year.
  • 100% remote work environment with a Dollar For provided computer

Expectations

  • Time Commitment: The contractor should expect to contribute approximately 10 hours/week or 40 hours/month, including all planning, meetings, correspondence, etc. The hours of this time are flexible, but should allow for the organizer to both host meetings with partner organizations during business hours and appear at community events and meetings on evenings and weekends.
  • Responsiveness: We seek to reply to all contacts within 2 business days of their last communication to us. Internal communications among Dollar For teams through slack or email should be acknowledged/responded to the day of receipt or the following work day to the extent possible.
  • Communication on Deliverables and Workload: The community organizer should be prepared to informally report bi-weekly on their current areas of focus, what tasks are taking up time, and where they need support to best serve Dollar For.

Dollar For is an equal opportunity employer. We celebrate diversity and differences of all kinds and are committed to an organizational culture in which everyone feels welcomed, included and valued. We encourage anyone who thinks they would be good at this role to apply. There is no such thing as the perfect candidate and we look forward to learning more about you!
