Job Summary
This is telecommunications work in assessing emergency calls and dispatching public safety and other emergency services to the public with care, speed and dispatch. Work also involves monitoring radios, logging in calls, tracking the status and location of dispatched personnel, and conducting queries and data entry work in the GCIC computer system. Duties involve shift work and possible overtime. This classification has no supervisory responsibilities.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Duties include but are not limited to:
- Receiving telephone calls and determining the nature of the emergency, the location of the incident and other information necessary for dispatching emergency services
- Dispatching fire, police, sheriff, emergency medical services, and other personnel and equipment to respond to calls
- Providing victims and others CPR instructions and other medical emergency assistance by telephone until responding unit arrives
- Recording case information on dispatch cards, case log sheets, and computer
- Performing vehicle/driver’s license/criminal history checks and related activities on NCIC/GCIC computer for peace officers
- Contacting wrecker services, utility and public safety personnel as requested to respond to emergency calls
- Assisting in training other operators on assigned shift
- Performing other duties as assigned
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
- High school diploma or General Educational Development Certificate (GED)
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:
- Must be 18 years of age or older
- Must have no record of any felony conviction. (Successful completion of a background check, physical and drug screen, fingerprinting, and other procedures used by police agencies to investigate the background and working history of prospective employees; must sign appropriate forms needed for police agency to investigate background)
- Must be able to type 35 wpm
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
- Possess and maintain a valid Georgia Driver's License (Class C) and a satisfactory motor vehicle record (MVR) if assigned job duties requiring the use of a vehicle
- Certification as a Communications Officer with P.O.S.T. by the end of the probationary period is required; maintain certification
- Certification as an Emergency Medical Dispatcher (EMD) by the end of the probationary period; maintain certification
- Certification in CPR; maintain certification
- Certification as a Georgia Crime Information Center (GCIC) terminal operator by the end of the probationary period; maintain certification
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Knowledge of or ability to learn county and department operations, ordinances, policies, procedures, terminology, codes, radio signals, and/or materials as they relate to assignment
- Knowledge of or ability to learn applicable federal and state, laws, rules, and regulations as they relate to assignment
- Knowledge of business English, spelling, and grammar
- Knowledge of basic business mathematics: addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division
- Knowledge of or ability to learn the Douglas County geography and the location of important buildings, areas, and landmarks, and county roads and highways, major residential areas, streets
- Knowledge of emergency communications operations and practices
- Knowledge of first aid and CPR
- Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions necessary for the safe operation of equipment, tools, and machinery as required by assignment
- Knowledge of telephone and radio operations and techniques
- Skill in creating, maintaining, and organizing accurate, detailed, and complete records
- Skill in effective inter-personal and public relations excellent oral and written communication skills to explain established policies and procedures the general public
- Skill in managing confrontational situations and the stress and emotional issues related to clientele in a professional manner

Salary: $42,408.08 annually, ($20.38 hourly) plus full benefits package
