What are the responsibilities and job description for the Park Specialist position at Douglas County (OR)?

Douglas County - Coastal Area Parks. 

Full Time Position, includes excellent full-family benefit package, PERS/OPSRP retirement and availability of deferred compensation retirement savings. 

Onsite (Courthouse complex) childcare available at a discounted employee rate through Roseburg Professional Childcare (Fowler St. location only).  Availability is subject to center waitlist. 
Position requires working weekends and holidays. 

Essential Functions:
This is not an exhaustive or all-inclusive list of responsibilities, skills, duties or functions associated with the job.
  • Provide customer service to patrons at campground, register vehicles/visitors entering the park; monitor reservation system, assist in the collection and processing of vehicle, visitor, camping fee’s;
  • Provide information, education and resources to visitors and guests of County parks, campgrounds and/or recreational areas;
  • Provide information regarding rules and restrictions for camping, parking and/or recreational use; deliver messages, report and/or respond to visitor inquiries and reported problems as needed;
  • Perform routine janitorial duties to maintain park facilities, grounds and equipment;
  • Perform routine, manual grounds-keeping duties
SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS:

Any equivalent combination of education and experience, which demonstrates the knowledge, skills and abilities required, will be considered. However, the following is preferred:  
  • Three years of relevant, progressively responsible work experience in a park, campground and/or recreational facility that includes visitor services and operations that provide the knowledge, skills and abilities required to perform the job,  
  •  Associates' degree in Park & Recreation, Natural Resource Management or Environmental studies plus 1 year of relevant work experience.
Required
  • At time of appointment, must possess valid Oregon Drivers License
  • Regular and consistent attendance  
In addition to the above requirements, applications will receive further evaluation based on Reasonable knowledge of:  the principles, practices, supplies and equipment used in the service and operation, landscape, maintenance, equipment, programs, and safety in parks, campgrounds and/or recreational areas including but not limited to, materials and methods applied to building maintenance, irrigation, janitorial and other relevant maintenance and development needs; reasonable knowledge of Oregon specialty codes that govern building, plumbing, landscape and construction; reasonable knowledge of the operation and repair of relevant equipment and machinery; knowledge of revenue handling and record keeping; and safety rules and identification of safety hazards. Skill inSafe operation of vehicles and power equipment, including use of hand tools; use of a personal computer; and professional handling of complex or confrontational interactions needed for successful conflict resolution. Ability to: Communicate effectively in both oral and written forms; courteously interact with visitors, employees, vendors, and the public in general; remain calm and address rule violations with the public in a positive and respectful manner; utilize problem identification and conflict resolution techniques; collect, transport and/or deposit monies in accordance with County and department cash handling practices; perform manual parks-maintenance related duties in areas of assignment; operate vehicles, trailers and other specialized equipment involved in park maintenance; work independently or as part of a crew; perform strenuous physical work outdoors in varying weather conditions; wear personal protective equipment as required; and perform limited mechanical, plumbing and carpentry repairs.While not part of initial applicant screening, the finalist for this position may be required to pass a criminal history background check as part of a contingent offer of employment.  Conviction of a crime may not necessarily disqualify an individual from employment.
 
Employment is contingent upon a pre-employment drug screen.  Presence of non-prescribed drugs, including marijuana, on drug screen results will result in disqualification pursuant to the County's drug and alcohol policy.  To determine if physically qualified to perform essential functions, employment offer is conditional upon satisfactory results of a post-offer medical and hearing exam conducted at county expense.
