Position Summary
Transmission Engineering offers qualified students, in accredited engineering programs leading to a Bachelor of Science Degree, the opportunity to work in various areas of engineering on a rotational basis as part of the engineering student worker program. Transmission Engineering manages the design, assessment and analysis of substations and transmission facilities throughout the Duke Energy service area. This department is also responsible for any upgrades to these facilities to ensure safe and reliable operation of the assets. Engineering co-ops will work alongside staff engineers who manage equipment reliability and perform analysis and design of structures, systems and components within Duke Energy’s transmission system. Rotational positions are available in Transmission Line Engineering, Protection & Controls Engineering, System Standards, Substation Engineering, Asset Management, Transmission Planning, Siting Permitting & Engagement and Project Management.
In addition to working within your discipline, you may be asked to work across a multi-engineering discipline platform. This co-op allows students to start in January, May, or August of 2023.
This co-op position will be based in our Carolinas East region of Duke Energy Progress and may require travel to various facilities within the area.
Responsibilities
CAD use for conceptual and final detail designs and as-builts
Regulatory permitting support (ex: erosion control, storm water management)
SPCC Plan (Spill Prevention Control and Countermeasure) modification and creation
Physical substation design (foundations, structures, electrical connections and ratings, equipment specifications, bills-of-material, CAD work)
Relay programming and wiring diagram design for microprocessor based relays and protection systems
Transmission system studies and analyses to support NERC Planning Standards and day-to-day operations of the bulk electric power system
Equipment monitoring and data collection and analysis for trending and assessment
Transmission line design of structure specification and placement as well as conductor sag and tension
Discrete project involvement and assistance to senior engineers and technologists or to project managers
Basic Qualifications
Currently enrolled and pursuing a four-year degree in Electrical, Civil, or Mechanical Engineering from an ABET accredited program
Cumulative GPA of at least 2.75
Valid driver’s license
Desired Qualifications
Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher
Ability to work a minimum of three non-contiguous co-op sessions
Class status as a Sophomore or Junior preferred
Demonstrated technical proficiency in use of computers, software, and engineering applications (CAD tools, MFAD, STAAD Pro, MatLab, PSS/E, PowerWorld)
Previous engineering work experience
Demonstrated excellent written and oral communication skills
Demonstrates ability to provide the quantity and quality of work necessary to reach an accomplishment
Demonstrated leadership qualities through effective decision making
Works effectively with others from diverse backgrounds to achieve common goal
Ability to deliver superior results within allocated time through effective prioritization, scheduling, planning and execution of assigned work
Demonstrates tenacity by remaining persistence in the face of difficulty
Specific Requirements
Required to wear personal protective equipment (hardhat, safety glasses, appropriate footwear and clothing, ear plugs, fall protection, etc.) as needed
Ability to lift and carry up to 25 lbs
Working Conditions
Office and field environment – requires walking, light lifting, infrequent climbing, and occasional exposure to temperature and noise
