Job Summary

The Director of Baking is responsible for ensuring that all bakery products are produced properly, on time, and in an efficient manner. This is achieved by direct oversight of all baking activities. This role requires an intricate knowledge of all products, production processes, and production equipment. Leadership skills are a must as the Director of Baking will be responsible for leading a team of up to 50 people ranging from Managers, Supervisors, Leads and Baking Associates. The Director of Baking is accountable for achieving goals by reporting progress through KPI’s. This position must have a working knowledge of food safety principles and create a culture amoungst their team that endorses compliance to food safety.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Interfaces with Procurement Manager to plan and prioritize bakery activities.
  • Supervises and evaluates performance of Bakery Department
  • Build employee schedules to ensure the proper allocation of resources to meet weekly sales and labor targets.
  • Manage food costs, wastes, and labor.
  • Ensures Good Manufacturing Practices are followed at all times by bakery staff.
  • Liaises with Quality Control department to ensure product quality; schedules production time to sort product with potential quality defects; assists in investigating root cause of customer complaints; Assists in implementing corrective actions to customer complaints; regulatory audit findings; and 3rd party audit non-compliances.
  • Liaises with Human Resources to hire front line production employees and supervision; approve payroll; execute disciplinary action for production personnel.
  • Liaises with Maintenance Department to communicate equipment issues, assign urgency level to equipment breakdowns, and prioritize maintenance work orders.
  • Liaises with Production Scheduler/Purchasing Manager by assisting in prioritizing production jobs based on shipping schedules; communicating personnel and equipment deficiencies; communicating existing or potential raw material shortages.
  • Assists in training of food safety/SQF principles as assigned by the Training Manager.
  • Creates and implements initiatives to improve productivity and product quality.

Qualifications and Skills * Ability to supervise and manage tasks and coordinate with personnel to meet project objectives.

  • Will possess or acquire a reasonable understanding of food and the manufacturing process.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and engage subject matter experts when needed to resolve conflicts related to delays, technical challenges, or any other project related issues.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products, specifically Project, as well as Adobe Acrobat.
  • Ability to generate timely, concise, professional, and effective business correspondence.
  • Ability to read and understand project documents, including packaging specs & drawings, punch lists, schedules, and scopes of work.
  • Ability to create and maintain project schedule.
  • Ability to interact with employees, customers and colleagues in a professional and courteous manner.
  • Effective time management and attention to detail.
  • Direct previous Baking industry experience is necessary.
  • Knowledge of Bakery Equipment, including but not limited to mixers, depositors, labeller, metal detector, tunnel oven, etc.
  • Knowledge and ability to use internal ERP technology platform.
  • Proven leadership skills necessary.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $40,000.00 - $45,000.00 per year
