Description: The Technical Service Chemist supports the Dunn-Edwards Tech Team and Sales by performing field complaint investigations, job inspections, and product recommendations. He/she collects data and documents it using a combination of tools, such as photographs, reports, SAP Zcomp process, and files it for reference as needed to help resolve complaints. Fundamental skills for the role include the ability to communicate effectively, organizational skills, team-work, observational skills, and the ability to utilize various computer software for proper data collection and entry. All work shall be performed with adherence to Dunn Edwards’ environmental, health, and safety (EHS) policies and procedures.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: The Technical Service Chemist will have an in-depth knowledge and understanding of Dunn-Edwards paint and sundry products. He/she operates independently and works on a normal basis with Sales representatives to provide technical support on product complaints. Build a strong understanding of Dunn Edwards products and capabilities, the competitive landscape, and market trends and needs to help assist the sales team on product related complaints. Occasionally mentor and train various lab chemists on job site visits for field testing and/or complaints.
Maintain good records, prepare quarterly complaint data analysis presentations and communicate findings to the technical team. Investigate product complaints from receipt to resolution, providing solutions to customer product issues. Assist the sales organization with product advice including when needed specification recommendations. Communicate product issues to the Technical Team in a timely manner for potential Product Improvement projects. Communicate new product needs that have surfaced from customer interactions to the Tech Team. Assist Technical Team with New Product Development and Product Improvement related field trials. Create and maintain an orderly and professional workspace with adherence to good housekeeping practices.
Supervisory Responsibilities: This role has no supervisory responsibilities. There may occasionally mentor, train, and/or direct the work of Technicians.
Education and/or Experience: Bachelor’s degree (B.S., B.A.) from an accredited, four-year college or university; and at least five years of related coatings experience; or equivalent combination of education/training and experience.
Experience with Stage Gate Processes and Six Sigma methodologies a plus.
Communication Skills: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, and governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively prepare and deliver presentations to a variety of audiences and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, industry professionals, and the general public.
Mathematical Skills: Ability to apply advanced mathematical concepts such as statistical analysis, design of experiments (DOE), exponents, logarithms, quadratic equations, and permutations. Ability to apply mathematical operations to such tasks as frequency distribution, determination of test reliability and validity, analysis of variance, correlation techniques, sampling theory, and factor analysis.
Computer Skills: Proficiency with MS Office. Experience with database systems, project management software, and statistical software preferred.
Reasoning Ability: Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

Additional Information: This role may require some interaction with other departments, including the Product Development Lab, Quality Control in Manufacturing, Marketing, and Sales to address specific needs.
