OPPORTUNITY:
We are looking for an Assistant Director, Coding/HIM for a full-time permanent position onsite in Las Vegas, NV.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Responsible for overseeing the coordination of accurate and compliant coding of pertinent medical information and daily operations of clinical documentation improvement (CDI) program in the Health Information Management department to include staff supervision, quality assurance, scheduling, monitoring workflow and preparing productivity reports.
- Contributes to the development of hospital performance improvement strategies.
- Duties include directing and supervising staff responsible for coding and clinical documentation, supporting activities with data analysis, providing technical assistance and establishing standards and procedures.
REQUIREMENTS:
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
- Equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree in Health Information Management and five (5) years of experience of coding or auditing in an acute care setting, two (2) years of which were in a supervisory/managerial role.
LICENSING/CERTIFICATIONS:
- Registered Health Information Technician, or Registered Health Information Administrator (issued by American Health Information Management Association), or Certified Coding Specialist. Certification in EPIC Coding is required within one (1) year of hire.
PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS:
- Inpatient Coding experience in a Level 1 trauma hospital setting.
- Outpatient and Professional Fee Coding experience.
- Coding Audit experience a plus.
- Extensive working knowledge of ICD-10-CM/PCS, CPT.
- Working knowledge of 3M-360 or similar platform.
- Five (5) years coding experience.
- Coding certifications:
- Certification in Epic Coding preferred.

Knowledge of:
- Federal, state and county laws and regulations governing the maintenance coding, storage and release of medical records; reimbursement and coding methodologies and guidelines; MS-DRGs, APR-DRGs; severity of illness, risk of mortality, medical necessity, core and quality measures and impact of length of stay; HACs/PSIs; coding principles and guidelines including ICD-10-CM/PCS, CPT/E&M, and HCPCS; coding documentation and billing regulations related to Medicare, Medicaid, and commercial insurance; revenue cycle workflows including charges/charge master, code edits, auditing, denials management, and documentation improvement; modern theories, principles and practices of effective supervision; budget principles and practices; principles of information management including principles of confidentiality and other patient rights; data collection and analysis techniques; personal computers and associate software applications; department and hospital safety practices and procedures; patient rights; infection control policies and practices; handling, storage, use and disposal of hazardous materials; department and hospital emergency response policies and procedures.
Skilled in:
- Planning, organizing, supervising, reviewing and evaluating the work of assigned staff; developing and implementing goals, objectives, policies, procedures and work standards; performing data analysis and using data for development of performance improvement processes; preparing written reports; tracking expenses related to area supervised, communicating with a wide variety of people from diverse socio-economic and ethnic backgrounds; developing programs; nursing principles and practices; developing policies and procedures; applying needs assessment techniques; evaluating quality control; applying adult education practices; assigning and monitoring the work of others; supervising and training staff; developing public relations; organizing and prioritizing among conflicting priorities; applying team building concepts; facilitating groups; performing statistical analysis; developing and monitoring budgets; using computers and related software applications.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Mobility to work in a typical office setting and use standard equipment, stamina to remain seated for extended periods of time and maintain concentration, vision to read printed materials and a computer screen, and hearing and speech to communicate effectively in-person and over the telephone. Strength and agility to exert up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.
