Job Description

Overview:

The Lab Supervisor is responsible for committing to and executing work plans, according to schedules assigned to that group. The Lab Supervisor is responsible for providing oversight to the work and managing the safety, productivity and quality of assigned personnel. Ensuring lab department related environmental and other reporting requirements and compliance requirements of the station are a critical responsibility of the Lab Supervisor. The Lab Supervisors are responsible for clearing barriers and addressing barriers in the workplace, and following all aspects of the Luminant work management program. The Lab Supervisor must also effectively communicate the plans and direction of the organization to the assigned work group.

Responsibilities:

• Develop, implement and assure continuous safe work practices in the laboratories and other station areas in which hazardous/regulated chemicals are stored and used.
• Review and evaluate bid specifications, proposals and contractor reports pertaining to laboratory activities and analysis.
• Maintain a thorough level of knowledge of applicable state and federal regulations - new, proposed and current.
• Monitor chemistry operating parameters and conditions, advise team of corrective actions that need to be taken.
• Ensures compliance with all operational, environmental and other regulatory and policy compliance requirements. Monitors station environmental, health and safety objectives and ensures they are met.
• Provides leadership and direction in the development and implementation of best practice routines, work process improvement, maintenance and operations procedures.
• Communicates performance metrics and expectations to direct reports.
• Provides leadership and accountability in order to achieve desired safety results (LockOut/Tag Out compliance, safety meeting attendance, safety policies/procedures, work practices, etc.)
• Provides advanced technical expertise and guidance for the resolution of station chemistry issues/concerns to include all water and waste water treatment processes, boiler cycle chemistry control, sampling and analysis, and lab instrumentation.
• Counsels, trains, evaluates, develops, guides and assists assigned personnel relative to job performance and duties.
• Develop and maintain positive working relationships between departments and internal customers.
• Paying particular attention to trends and searching for improvement opportunities. Monitor chemistry operating parameters and conditions, advise team of corrective actions that need to be taken
• Perform equipment ownership responsibilities for station chemistry and water treatment equipment which includes budgeting, maintenance planning, identifying improvements, requesting spare part inventory, etc.
• Support the FGD Process lab for goal of high removal efficiency and saleable quality gypsum.
• Review of FGD analytic results, support of FGD procedures and overall support of lab technicians working at the FGD.

Requirements:

• Bachelor of Science Degree in either Chemistry or Chemical Engineering from an accredited university or college; OR 8 years related work experience.
• Experience and demonstrated written and oral communications skills, including the ability to present information, facilitate meetings and provide direction to others.
• Experience and demonstrated computer skills including the ability to use various applications such as Microsoft Office Products (Outlook, Word, Excel, Powerpoint), work management system (Maximo), Plant Information (PI) programs.
• Demonstrated ability to work independently in a leadership capacity.

Preferred Requirements:

• Eight (8) years of directly related station experience in boiler/steam chemistry processes, and FGD Chemistry process; water treatment processes and equipment ( clarifiers, multi-media and GAC filtration, reverse osmosis, demineralizers, and condensate polishers), lab bench top and in-line instrumentation and analysis, wastewater treatment and analysis; drinking water, coal sampling and sampling systems; and environmental testing, sampling, and analysis.
• Experience with FGD systems, equipment and processes
• Financial knowledge and skills including ability to analyze data.
• Strong computer skills such as PI system for trending and including ability to use various applications.
• Effective leadership skills.
• Effective communication skills, both orally and in writing.
