What are the responsibilities and job description for the Archivist position at East Carolina University?

East Carolina University’s Laupus Health Sciences Library invites applications for a full-time faculty Archivist. This position will hire at the rank of Library Assistant Professor with potential to advance to Library Associate Professor, and Library Professor. This position is fixed-term and non-tenure track.
The Archivist coordinates, manages, and contributes to processing and description of archival, manuscript, and historical artifact collections within the Laupus Health Sciences Library. This includes handling all needs associated with archival accessions and processing, completing description and metadata projects using national archival and preservation standards, meeting with gift-in-kind donors and researchers, designing exhibits for inside the library, exhibits in other university spaces, and online exhibits, managing needs associated with historical programs, and working collaboratively with the director of the Country Doctor Museum on managing their archival collections, collaborating on exhibits, and contributing to their programs and periodically assisting with museum tours.
The Archivist is responsible for the evaluation, selection, acquisition, receipt, care, processing, and display of historical manuscript materials and artifacts. The position conceptualizes and implements library historical services; conducts ongoing assessments of the library historical collections and needs; and develops blog posts, LibGuides and other research and promotional material, as needed.
The Archivist reports to the Assistant Director of Collections & Historical Services and works closely with the Director of the Country Doctor Museum.

Initial appointment is a one (1) year fixed-term contract; subsequent renewal may be for a multi-year fixed-term contract. Comprehensive benefits package includes 24 days annual leave, 12 holidays, 12 days sick leave, 1 day of personal observance leave, and 24 hours of community service leave; FSIL leave, health, dental, vision, disability, and life insurance; and support for professional development and training. Hybrid and flexible work arrangements are also available.

Specific duties:
1. Manages the procurement and selection of, arrangement, assessment, discoverability, accessibility, accuracy, and deselection of historical archival materials and artifacts.
2. Works to secure speakers for Medical History Interest Group lectures. Communicates with the Medical History Interest Group to aid in planning. Promotes the lectures through emails, video screens, print materials, and other formats, such as social media. Coordinates filming with ITCS videography team. Ensures video recordings are hosted on appropriate platforms through working with the ECU Libraries’ webmaster. Assesses success of lectures. Provides statistics and sign-in sheet to supervisor and Budget Officer following each lecture.
3. Contributes to selection of rare/historical books for acquisition.
4. Participates in and contributes to ECU’s mission to be a national model for student success, public service and regional transformation. Support and facilitate learning, teaching, and research by working on engaging others on the use of the library’s history collections. Develops knowledge of the Laupus history collections in order to instruct users in the value of appropriate resources and to assist users in locating relevant materials. Teaches, writes, and presents based on materials in the collections. Provides tailored orientations and tours of library history collections spaces.
5. Collaborates collegially with the Country Doctor Museum on shared exhibits, archives management, programming support, and serving as a docent/backup support during staff shortages and large events.
6. Works collegially with counterparts at Joyner Library and represents Laupus Library on special collections-related committees, initiatives, and work groups.
7. Develops and maintains current knowledge of issues, standards, trends, and best practices regarding the creation, management, storage, organization, appraisal, description, and preservation of physical, digitized, and born-digital collections.
8. Develops and maintains positive and productive relationships with health sciences campus unit liaisons and coordinates services for the procurement, retention, and use of health science campus historical materials
9. Supervises the activities of student employees and interns.
10. The Archivist is expected to serve on library and university committees and to be active in professional organizations.

11. Other duties as assigned.
This position may be eligible for flexible work arrangements that may include flexible time, compressed workweeks and/or a partially remote work location, consistent with UNC System Office policy. East Carolina University employees are generally required to reside within a reasonable commuting distance of their assigned duty station.

Minimum Education/Experience
Candidates must have a master’s degree in Library and Information Science, History, Archival Studies or other relevant master’s degree. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Demonstrated ability to use archival and/or artifact management systems
Demonstrated experience in appraising, arranging, describing, and referencing records and documents transferred to archival custody.
Strong communications skills
High level of attention to detail
Ability to handle multiple projects and tasks simultaneously
Proficiency with Microsoft Office 365 products
Demonstrated experience in developing exhibits

License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation
None

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education
Certified Archivist
Demonstrated experience helping others with reference questions
Demonstrated knowledge of WordPress
Demonstrated ability to successfully implement and manage library history programs.
Experience using Adobe InDesign and other products in the Adobe Creative Cloud Suite
