What are the responsibilities and job description for the Scientist, Fermentation position at Eat Just?
Job Details
What we're looking for
The R&D team at Eat Just is looking for a motivated, hands-on Scientist, Fermentation to improve and optimize recombinant protein production in microbial hosts at the bench scale. This role will be responsible for developing and optimizing fermentation processes to produce proteins for applications in food products. These efforts will expand our ability and methods to source proteins and will further our understanding of protein functionality.
What you'll do
- Plan, execute, and analyze bench-scale fermentation experiments for the synthesis of recombinant proteins in microbial hosts;
- Evaluate fermentation conditions, media formulations, and feeding strategies to improve product titer, production rate, and productivity in bench top bioreactors;
- Design experiments to screen parameters at the microscale (tube and flask) translatable to larger scales (bench top and pilot scale bioreactors);
- Work collaboratively with other members of the team to improve protein yields, quality, and efficiency in fermentation;
- Set-up, operate, and troubleshoot bioreactor runs;
- Evaluate and establish protein expression potential of engineered strains;
- Interface with contract manufacturing organizations (CMOs) for technology transfer and process scale-up;
- Maintain and fix fermentation equipment as needed;
- Provide input on new equipment purchases;
- Work collaboratively with members of the Strain Engineering, Protein Chemistry, and Analytical Chemistry teams;
- Summarize and report data and method development efforts in writing and present work in collaborative meetings with other R&D groups;
- Maintenance of notebook records, sample databases, standard operating procedures, and other documentation;
- Perform additional laboratory duties as required to support R&D and company projects;
What youll bring
- Degree in Chemical Engineering, Bioengineering, Biochemistry or a related field; PhD with 0-2 years ideal. For the right candidate open to an MS with 5 years, or BS with 8 years;
- Demonstrated technical expertise in operating bioreactors and optimizing fermentation processes at bench scale;
- Experienced in fermentation processes to produce recombinant proteins in yeast and fungal hosts such as Pichia, Aspergillus, and Trichoderma;
- Experience with setup, operation and troubleshooting of bioreactor systems;
- Knowledge of Design of Experiments (DoE) and principles of Statistic;
- Knowledge of metabolic pathways and their correlation to fermentation performance is a plus;
- Knowledge of or experience with downstream recovery processes a plus;
- Ability to effectively capture and communicate data and results;
- Ability to work independently and in teams, with strong critical thinking, time management and organizational skills;
- Excellent attention to detail, ability to maintain accurate records, and an affinity for troubleshooting;
- Ability to thrive in a collaborative, diverse, and fast-paced environment.
