Job Summary
The Community Outreach Coordinator develops, coordinates, and implements community outreach and engagement strategies to advance Ecotrust’s tribal lands and waters stewardship efforts. These ongoing efforts include increasing visibility of tribal stewardship through storytelling and data visualization, enhancing capacity for tribal partners through technical assistance and information gathering, and building tribal partnerships, networks, and coalitions.
The Outreach Coordinator will work closely with Ecotrust colleagues and external partners in designing and coordinating community outreach and engagement plans and activities, initially with a focus on agroforestry systems and outreach to tribes in the Pacific Northwest. These activities are expected to grow and nurture new relationships and partnerships in Native communities, with Native-led organizations, nonprofits, government agencies, and educational institutions

Primary Responsibilities

Outreach and Resource Mobilization
- Plan, coordinate, and track community outreach activities across projects.
- Implement outreach and engagement activities through facilitation, technical support, and the use of aligned resources to ensure these activities are accessible and meet multiple learning and engagement needs.
- Collaborate with partners and local, state, and federal agencies as needed to build upon community assets. Deepen, expand, and sustain community utilization of these resources, programs, and services.
- Build, expand, and deepen relationships among partners, Ecotrust, and local, state, and federal agencies in ways that build trust, understanding, and transparency.
- Develop a basic understanding and cultivate areas of specialized knowledge of policies and programs related to the fields in which we work including tribal lands and waters stewardship, agroforestry, forestry, and/or fire.
- Represent Ecotrust as a participant in relevant conferences, workshops, and meetings convened by other organizations.
Administrative, Operations, and Communications
- Document processes and workflows, draft and send internal and external communications, and organize team resources.
- Collaborate with Ecotrust’s Communications team to support key efforts that elevate the stories, experiences, and assets of communities with whom we partner; this may include developing content for project activities such as photo shoots, story maps, videos, website and social media, and print materials.
- Support the conceptualization and writing of new funding proposals; occasionally participate in meetings with current and potential funders.
General Ecotrust Responsibilities
- Participate in monthly Ecotrust all staff meetings.
- Participate in team and body of work meetings.
- Participate in the implementation of Ecotrust’s 5 year strategic plan and contribute to organizational change efforts. This may also include participating in all-staff anti-oppression learning and action sessions, reviewing all-staff communications, and providing feedback by responding to surveys and participating in group discussions.

- At least 2 years experience working with Tribes, intertribal organizations, nonprofits, or related fields.
- Possessing a valid driver's license and a working motor vehicle for use during performance of duties. Where necessary, mileage reimbursement will be provided.
- Computer skills and ability to learn and adopt tools that may be new: We use a combination of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint), Google Drive, Slack, Asana, and Zoom.
- Basic verbal and written communication abilities with clear grammar and structure and cohesive thought
- Ability to create and deliver simple presentations
Organizational and Administrative
- Excellent project management skills, including ability to keep record of activities, contacts and timeline for a team, ability to notify team members of follow up and deadlines in a timely manner, ability to prioritize activities and to provide leadership with updates.
- Action-oriented with an ability to identify gaps in knowledge and proactively seek out information or other resources to fill those gaps.
- Able to support a busy and active team by identifying gaps in knowledge and proactively support filling those gaps with information for the project team and for internal and external partners.
Collaboration, Engagement, and Outreach
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively with others in person, as part of a remote team, in groups, and across partner networks which may include tribes, intertribal organizations, nonprofits, and federal, state, and local agencies.
- Skilled at supporting coalitions or workgroups and building relationships with a range of partners with differing priorities and perspectives.
- Community engagement and/or outreach experience in both individual and group settings.
- Lived experience with and/or within community-based groups that support and/or are made up of tribal producers, land stewards, and their communities.
- Demonstrated understanding of - and first-hand experience with - the multitude of environmental, social, and economic issues tribal communities face.
Other Useful Qualifications

- Direct education and/or professional experience in tribal land management (e.g. forestry), agroforestry (tribal gathering practices), food sovereignty, or related fields.
- Deep understanding of and/or direct lived experience with tribes and Native communities. Substantial knowledge of one of more tribes or Native communities (preferably in the Pacific Northwest), including relevant history, policy, and cultural norms. Awareness of the diversity across tribes and Native communities.
- Experience with – or interest and willingness to learn about - federal and state policies and programs to support climate resilience, ecological lands and waters stewardship, and intergenerational wealth building.
- Experience participating in or providing training, technical assistance, and/or facilitating peer support among cultural practitioners, land stewards, and producer/community groups.
- Experience and skills in developing and extending culturally relevant resources and services to communities.
- 1 years experience in creative storytelling production and ability to work with community partners and contractors to center community-driven narratives.

Working conditions:
- Long periods of time spent at a computer.
- Engage in regular communication through electronic channels and in person.
- Flexible hybrid schedule available: remote (from home or suitable work space) and/or in-office in SE Portland (open cubicles).
- May be required to travel 1-2 times per month at Ecotrust’s expense to participate in programming, conferences, or partner meetings, especially during peak conference season (fall) and to the office in Portland (for those based outside of Portland).
- May occasionally work during weekends or evenings to deliver programming at times that meet the needs of participants.
