Senior Battery Scientist – $100,000- $142,000 – Rochester, NY
The Role
Sionic Energy is seeking a Senior Battery Scientist to join our team and play a pivotal role in refining the science for our silicon anode and electrolyte innovations. Reporting to the Director of Product Management, you will help lead our R&D team to optimize and adapt our technology to various cell formats, duty cycles, and customer requirements.
As a Senior Battery Scientist at Sionic, you will have a strategic impact on the commercial rollout of our silicon battery designs and electrolyte products.
Key Responsibilities:
- Act as team lead in electrolyte product development activities.
- Conduct materials, formulation, and design evaluations for new product versions and new generations of electrolyte products.
- Design and develop electrolyte formulations to meet customer requirements for both conventional and next-gen Li-ion battery chemistries.
- Compose and conduct experiments on prototype cells including but not limited to electrochemical testing, abuse tests, and cell teardowns.
- Design and execute experiments based on DOE and Taguchi methodologies.
- Method development to implement new and existing techniques to advance research and development goals.
- Create empirical and theoretical models to guide electrolyte and battery designs.
- Analyze and present technical results to management and customers.
- Support battery design and manufacturing as a subject matter expert in electrolytes

The Person
- At least 5 years of experience in the Li-ion battery field, with a focus on the implementation of novel materials in next-generation chemistries.
- Master’s, Ph.D., or equivalent experience in Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, or related field.
- Strong background in the characterization, formulation and implementation of electrolytes preferred.
- Knowledge of the fundamentals of cell lithium-ion battery materials, components, performance, cell testing/data analysis, and failure modes.
- Proficiency in electrolyte characterization techniques, prototype cell assembly, electrochemical testing techniques, working in a glovebox or dry room.
- Familiarity with DOE, FMEA and Taguchi methodologies preferred.
- Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to combine theory with empirical observation.
- Ability to interact effectively with suppliers, partners, vendors, and colleagues.
- Passion for innovation in the energy storage space.
