JOB TITLE:   

Foundations and 2D Media instructor

JOB PURPOSE:   

The University of Wyoming Department of Visual Arts welcomes applications for a full time benefited Fixed Term Rolling Contract position in Foundations and 2D Media.  Qualified candidates will have the ability to work within a Foundations curriculum and teach the full range of Foundations classes including Foundation 2D, Foundation 3D, Foundation Color Theory, Drawing I, Digital Media, and First Year Seminar.  They will also be familiar with a variety of media and approaches used in Foundations classes. Their experience should include teaching in a Foundations curriculum, familiarity with various Foundations pedagogies, and teaching first year students in a Liberal Arts setting. The successful candidate would also be able to teach in a secondary 2D area, such as Painting, Drawing, or other areas as needed. Desired skills include experience as a skilled communicator with the ability to communicate orally, in writing and digitally; experience working in a collaborative team of educators; experience working with non-traditional students, first generation students, and students with disabilities; and experience in professional organizations like FATE and SECAC. The successful candidate will incorporate equitable classroom policies such as encouraging inclusion and representation of diverse viewpoints and utilizing multiple methods of content delivery including in-person, online and hybrid modalities.

 

The Foundations Core at UW aims to:

  • Provide acculturation to the university, college, and department.
  • Build community and encourage dialogue that is inclusive of varying beliefs and points of view.
  • Develop students’ ability to communicate both visually and verbally.
  • Expose students to a diverse range of artists and artistic practices representing many cultures, encourage students to be conversant in 2D, 3D, Color, Digital Media and Drawing through a wide range of media. Intersections between 2D, 3D, Color, Digital Media and Drawing are stressed.
  • Emphasize the production of well-crafted objects through iterative sketches, models, material studies, and practice.
  • Develop strategies for conceptual development through research, experimentation, ideation, and dialogue.

 

The Visual Arts Building, a state-of-the-art Leed Certified construction, was completed in 2012 and provides individual office and faculty studio space in the building and near the Foundations Area.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  

  • Teach a 3/3 to 3/4 course load for the academic year including ART 1110: Foundation 2D, ART 1120: Foundation 3D, ART 1130: Foundation Color Theory.  Other possible courses include ART 1101: First Year Seminar, ART 1115: Digital Media, ART 1005: Drawing I, ART 2210: Painting I, and the potential to teach in a studio area of expertise as necessary.
  • Assist in the oversight and maintenance of the Foundations area classrooms.
  • Work within an integrated first year experience that prepares students for studio art, visual communication design and art education degrees
  • Assist in recruitment and retention initiatives.

REMOTE WORK ELIGIBILITY:

This position provides vital support to campus customers and requires the successful candidate be available to work on campus.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  

  • Master of Fine Arts
  • 2 years teaching experience 
  • Demonstrated active professional practice and proficiency in a range of studio techniques applicable to Foundations curricula
  • Proficiency in and ability to teach in secondary 2D areas of Painting and Drawing
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work with others in a collegial team atmosphere and coordinate teaching with instructors
  • Demonstrated dedication to, appreciation for, and understanding of DEI in and beyond the classroom and curriculum

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:  

  • Demonstrated 2 years teaching experience post-graduation is preferred
  • Ability to help oversee and maintain Foundations Area classrooms
  • Ability to work within an integrated first year experience that prepares students for studio art, visual communication design and art education degrees – and assist in recruitment and retention initiatives
  • Ongoing engagement in scholarly, creative, and/or professional activities
