  • Job Objective: A brief overview of the position.
    • This is a management role with scope of supporting the entire Eisenhower Health System Cancer Program, which includes all activities related to cancer prevention, detection, diagnosis, treatment, and survivorship in the health system’s inpatient settings, outpatient settings, surgical areas, and specialty provider offices. As part of the responsibility of supporting the system-wide cancer program, the role includes accountability for maintaining processes to sustain Commission on Cancer and other quality-related accreditations, liaison with all providers and support staff providing cancer-related services, oversight of the daily operations and personnel of the Cancer Registry department, responsibility for ensuring data quality in all cancer data repositories, accountability for accurate and timely submission of cancer data to state and regulatory agencies, and organization of data and reporting to support cancer research and proactive improvements in quality of patient care

  • Qualifications
      Education
      • Required: Bachelor's Degree
      • Preferred: Master’s Degree or higher in associated field or completion of a National Cancer Registry Association (NCRA) Accredited Formal Education Program
      Licensure/Certification
      • Required: Certified Tumor Registrar
      Experience
      • Required: Supervisory experience & 3 years Registry experience (minimum)
      • Preferred: 5-7 years experience working in an American College of Surgeons (ACOS) accredited cancer registry program with participation in successful Commission on Cancer site visits
  • Essential Responsibilities
    • Demonstrates compliance with Code of Conduct and compliance policies, and takes action to resolve compliance questions or concerns and report suspected violations.
    • Cancer Program Accreditation Leadership and Management

      • Provides essential leadership and guidance to Eisenhower Health Cancer Committee, Administration, and medical staff in the strategic planning, attainment and renewal of programmatic accreditations such as Commission on Cancer (COC) and Quality Oncology Practice Initiative (QOPI) accreditations.
      • Establishes strong collaborative relationships and excellent channels of communication with all providers and support staff providing cancer-related prevention, detection, diagnostic, treatment and survivorship services, including acting as a resource for the Cancer Committee physician chair and Cancer Liaison Physician (CLP).
      • Annually initiates Cancer Committee development of Cancer Program goals, and takes accountability for tracking status of goal attainment and facilitating goal achievement.
      • Coordinates the overall Cancer Program compliance with the ACOS Standards, including preparation of the quarterly Cancer Committee agenda, reports, minutes and follow up. Ensures agenda meets COC criteria and that minutes thoroughly document outcomes in COC-compliant format.
      • Ensures quarterly completion of the ACOS Commission on Cancer Pre Review Questionnaire (PRQ).
      • Plan and implement of Cancer Program Quality and Performance Improvement studies including criteria, procedures, data collection, data submission, reporting and follow up.

      Cancer Registry Operations Management

      • Manages daily operations of the Cancer Registry ensuring the ACOS Commission on Cancer.
        Cancer program standards are maintained.
      • Maintains regulatory compliance including ACOS Commission on Cancer and California Cancer Registry standards for case finding, abstracting timeliness, follow up, and quality control.
      • Selects, trains, directs, evaluates and counsels registry staff to attain the highest levels of performance.
      • Uses NCRA guidelines to directly oversee, mentor and train Cancer Registrar I employees pursuing the Certified Tumor Registrar certification.
      • Determines qualifications of departmental competence levels and standards of performance.
      • Provides opportunities to promote knowledge of current cancer practice trends, ensures staff complete educational requirements and maintain certification.
      • Coordinates and integrates services with other clinical departments of the Lucy Curci Cancer Center.
      • Assures productivity of department.
      • Assesses, plans, and implements process improvement strategies to continuously improve efficiency and effectiveness of service.
      • Establishes and maintains policies for departmental operations.
      • Plans, implements and maintains departmental budgetary goals.
      • Assures high level of employee and physician satisfaction.
      • Manages supplies to achieve service requirements and steward organizational resources.

      Cancer Data & Information Management

      • Manages cancer registry information systems to maintain the data repository and create necessary reporting mechanisms.
      • Promotes use of Registry data and processes reports in a timely manner.
      • Utilizes the National Cancer Database (NCDB) quality tools, such as RCRS effectively to proactively drive compliance with national quality measures for cancer patient care.
      • Oversee the production and distribution of the Cancer Program Annual Report.
      • Develops customized reports using specialized software to provide evidence-based support for cancer research activities and development of new cancer treatment service offerings at Eisenhower Health.

      Cancer Program Cancer Conferences (Tumor Boards) Planning & Support

      • Plan, create agendas, and coordinate hospital-wide and specialty Cancer Conferences (Tumor Boards) and monitor Tumor Board activity for compliance with ACOS Commission on Cancer Standards.
      • Serves as liaison to each Tumor Board Physician Coordinator to resolve issues as needed.
      • Collaborate with UC San Diego Health Cancer Network representatives to facilitate and initiate new joint tumor boards via use of remote conference technology and secure data sharing methods.
