Overview
JMI, proud to be apart of Element Materials Technology has a current opening for a Microbiologist I to join our growing team in North Liberty, IA. Under general supervision, the Microbiologist I performs simple to moderately complex laboratory testing and analysis on bacterial and fungal specimens to provide information to the SENTRY program and new drug development protocols. Will use a variety of microbiological procedures that require the use of professional judgment.
Responsibilities
- Process incoming bacterial and fungal specimens following proper safety guidelines using appropriate PPE
- Assess isolates that are received using personal judgment, knowledge of organisms, MALDI-TOF and otherbiochemical tests to properly identify organisms to ensure correct isolate is banked.
- Performs MALDI-TOF isolate identifications and interprets results.
- Properly pulls frozen isolates from the bank for SENTRY and protocol testing.
- Prepares and participates in all aspects of MIC testing including subbing isolates, preparing inoculums,pipetting, and running inoculating instruments.
- Interprets MICs results from broth microdilution, agar dilution, disk diffusion and Etest® methodologies
- Participates in new drug development protocols of minor complexity, such as broth microdilution testingwitha simple panel design.
- Participates in the overall quality assurance program by performing QC testing and documenting resultsappropriately. Informs Laboratory Manager and QA department if failures are observed and carries outrecommended corrective actions.
- Calibrates, troubleshoots, and conducts routine maintenance on laboratory instrumentation.
- Complies with applicable regulatory and safety requirements of the laboratory.
- Identifies errors and problems as well as opportunities for improvement and makes recommendations to theLaboratory Manager for resolution.
- Assists with writing and revising laboratory procedures according to CLSI and regulatory guidelines.
Skills / Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in a laboratory science field from an accredited college or university or an equivalent combination of EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE is required.
- Certification by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists or National Certifying Agency is desirable.
