Summary of Position
Provide direct patient care within the normal scope of practice for a general dentist.
Direct and supervise the activities of a treatment team that includes a dental assistant, dental hygienist and is supported by a
receptionist and other business staff.
Principal Accountabilities
Perform preventive, diagnostic and restorative treatment which is within the normal scope of a general dentist:
perform exams; fix or remove damaged teeth; provide patients with cleanings and more in-depth procedures like
root canals and cavity fillings; evaluate x-rays to determine patient's health.
Evaluate a patient's oral health to spot cavities and diagnose conditions like gingivitis and more severe diseases like
oral cancer before they develop further; develop treatment plans to deal with any dental health issues; refer patients
to a specialist if needed.
Work closely with Dental Hygienists to clean teeth and suggest treatment options and good hygiene practices for
patients; interact with patients and instruct them on proper oral care; provide patients with other professional
resources for those who need braces or retainers.
Administer or prescribe medications to decrease pain and improve patient's health; may measure and fit dental
appliances.
Accurately chart patient records in a timely manner, the note must be complete and represent the entirety of the
dental interaction.
Direct the training of chair side dental assistants.
Participate in the mentoring of dental residents through clinical and didactic inputs.
Participate in the departments' quality assurance program, including peer review activities.
Meet budgeted targets for clinical productivity and documentation standards as measured by QA reviews.
Meet all mandated continuing education requirements, in order to maintain licensure.
Assume the role of the "on-call" dentist, for after-hours emergencies (in a rotational schedule with the other general
dentists).
Perform other related duties which may be assigned by practice management from time to time
Education, Training, Licenses, Certifications
Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) or Doctor of Medicine in Dentistry (DMD) degree from a dental program accredited by the
Commission on Dental Accreditation.
Must be a New York State licensed dentist, currently registered with the State Education Department.
Must have, and maintain, an unrestricted state license to practice dentistry. (R)
Must be a member in good standing of the American Dental Association; Dental Society of the State of New York; and the
Third District Dental Society.
Must be currently registered with the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA).
Relevant Work Experience, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
10 years of relevant, professional work experience. (R)
General practice residency and 2 years of either military or private practice. (R)
Excellent customer service skills and empathy; must show patience when dealing with patients. (R)
Ability to effectively communicate with patients regarding their health and care. (R)
Ability to manage staff and processes directly or via a matrix arrangement. (R)
Proficient with MS Office and systems related to entering and updating information. (R)
Strong attention to detail; ability to interpret symptoms and conditions and develop prevention/treatment plans. (R)
Ability to work with hands in small spaces; manual dexterity sufficient to provide effective treatment. (R)
