Description:
Reporting to the Head of Special Collections, the Special Collections Reference Coordinator (SCRC) is the primary contact for researchers using special collections materials at Pitts Theology Library. The SCRC will respond to researchers’ inquiries (via email, phone, or in person) by providing assistance with library collections, coordinating digitization or reduplication requests, and making arrangements for in-person visits to the reading room. The SCRC will use the special collections request application (Aeon) to monitor and fulfill requests. This person will retrieve and re-shelve items and help with the stacks maintenance of rare books and archival materials. The SCRC will work closely with reference librarians to assist with special collection reference requests and this person will also work closely with the Digital Asset Librarian to coordinate digitization requests. The SCRC will also provide instruction and guidance to student assistants carrying out various tasks in the department. Additionally, this person will provide statistics on the usage of space and materials to the Head of Special Collections.

Pitts Theology Library, one of the premier theological libraries in North America, is one of Emory University’s six instructional libraries. It holds a distinguished collection of theological materials in a beautiful new 60,000 square-foot facility. With active instructional and outreach programs and over 630,000 volumes, including over 145,000 volumes in its Special Collections, the library provides rich resources and services for the Candler School of Theology, Emory University, and the broader community.

As the primary coordinator for patron research and access to Special Collections materials, the SCRC will work in the library building, primarily at the reference desk in the Jeschke-Graham Reading Room.

JOB DESCRIPTION:
  • Coordinates a significant library user service program, system, or major function.
  • Develops goals and objectives for the program, system or function in consultation with appropriate internal/external managers, vendors, and faculty.
  • May assess user needs and/or analyze and maintain system data, and develop new services or programs.
  • Develops, oversees, and/or conducts testing and/or training for the program, system, or function and resolves problems.
  • Develops and communicates policies and procedures; creates and maintains documentation.
  • May monitor workflow and budget.
  • Performs related responsibilities as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • A bachelor's degree in a related area.
  • Four years of library experience.
  • Requires one or more of the following: computer skills, special skills, subject expertise or a proficiency in a foreign language.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s degree in library and information studies, or a degree in history, theology, or religion
  • Experience supervising student employees
  • Experience in library reference or customer service more broadly
  • Knowledge of and experience with archives and special collections best practices, including familiarity with Describing Archives: A Content Standard (DACS) and Encoded Archival Description (EAD)
