Position SummaryAs the Communications Manager, you will play a crucial role in advancing the organization's mission by developing and implementing comprehensive communication strategies. You will be responsible for crafting compelling messages, managing media relations, and overseeing the creation of various communication materials. The ideal candidate is a strategic thinker with excellent writing and interpersonal skills, who can effectively communicate Empower DC’s story to diverse audiences.
Key Responsibilities
Newsletter Production Management:
Oversee the production of the organization's email newsletter on a regular basis, ensuring content accuracy, relevance, and timeliness.
Event Promotion:
Design and create fliers for Empower DC events to effectively promote and increase attendance.
Coordinate the distribution of mass emails to promote organizational events and initiatives.
Campaign Support:
Assist staff in the development of narratives and materials for Empower DC's various campaigns.
Website Management:
Update the campaigns section of the Empower DC website to reflect current initiatives and activities.
Impact Reporting:
Develop quarterly updates and posts detailing Empower DC's impact to share with stakeholders and supporters.
Take the lead in the production of Empower DC's annual report, highlighting achievements, challenges, and future goals.
Media Relations:
Maintain the press list and cultivate relationships with members of the press to pitch stories and secure coverage.
Write and disseminate press releases for key events and activities, averaging 1-2 per month.
Handle media interview requests and coordinate with relevant staff members.
Social Media Management:
Manage Empower DC's social media accounts, including tracking usage, addressing spam, and responding to inquiries.
Regularly post updates and events on social media platforms to engage with the community and raise awareness.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Communications, Public Relations, Marketing, or a related field preferred, but not required.
Proven experience in communications, public relations, or a related role, preferably in the nonprofit sector.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Experience with social media management and content creation.
Proficient in graphic design tools for creating visually appealing materials.

Benefits
This is a full-time, exempt level position, eligible for full benefits. Empower DC covers 100% of the costs of health, dental and vision insurance. Empower DC annually contributes 2.5% of each full-time employee’s salary to a retirement benefit plan. Employees accrue 10 days of vacation leave, 10 days sick leave, two personal days and all federal holidays. Our office is also closed between Christmas and New Year’s Day. After each five-year anniversary with Empower DC, an employee is entitled to one month of paid leave as a thank you for long-time service, and as a time to refresh and rejuvenate. During the pandemic employees also receive a monthly $100 telework stipend.
