Fish Biologist II

 

Environmental Assessment Services, LLC (EAS) is a nationally known, scientific environmental characterization company based in Eastern Washington since 2005.  EAS is currently accepting applications for a Fish Biologist to support the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) for ocean acidification monitoring and research.

  • Collection and handling of carbonate and nutrient samples, to include at-sea sample collection, preparation of sampling gear, receipt of samples from surveys, shipment of samples to analysis facilities, receipt of post-analysis data, inventory of samples collected, and data received.
  • Assist in logistical support, maintenance and installation of shipboard flow through instrumentation systems including pCO2 (partial pressure of CO2 instruments), TSG (thermosalinograph), dissolved oxygen, pH and nitrate sensors on both NOAA and commercially owned vessels.
  • Provide support to collaborative OA monitoring efforts with NEFSC's Ocean Acidification research partners including NOAA AOML (Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory).
  • Data entry for the Oceans and Climate Branch programs including biological, chemical, and physical data.
  • Provide logistical support for research and monitoring cruises including equipment set-up and gear staging.
  • Will be responsible for safe handling and storage of hazardous chemicals used in the preservation of samples and in laboratory analyses. Will complete all required chemical safety training and follow all required procedures.
  • Perform laboratory chemical analyses including measurements of dissolved oxygen, total alkalinity and dissolved inorganic carbon.
  • Ship-based and at-sea work related to Oceans and Climate Branch programs on merchant vessels, research vessels, and NOAA vessels that may require overtime hours.
  • Laboratory-based and ship-based maintenance of oceanographic equipment including CTD (conductivity-temperature-depth instrument) and water-samplers.
  • Will assist in the operation, set-up and troubleshooting of data-acquisition software for oceanographic instrumentation.
  • Other technical duties related to the operational programs of the Oceans and Climate Branch.
  • May be required to drive Government Vehicles.

 

Minimum Job Qualifications:

 

  • Graduate degree in marine chemistry, environmental chemistry, biogeochemistry, biological oceanography, chemical oceanography or similar.
  • Technical proficiency maintaining and operating shipboard sampling equipment, including pCO2(partial pressure of CO2 instruments), TSG (thermosalinograph), CTD (conductivity-temperature-depth instrument and attendant sensors).
  • Experience handling hazardous chemicals and conducting laboratory chemical analyses.
  • Experience working on vessels including the deployment of oceanographic instrumentation and installation of scientific equipment.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in the following areas:
    • Strong record keeping and organizational skills.
    • Basic data entry and analysis.
    • Communication both verbally and using written materials (including visual presentations).
    • Independent worker with strong time management skills.
    • Adaptability to quickly changing priorities and strict timelines.
    • Attention to detail.
