Environmental Lab Technician

JOB POSITION: Full Time, Non-Exempt

 Environmental Monitoring & Technologies, Inc. (EMT) is an environmental laboratory, providing our clients with quality testing services for 35 years. We specialize in analysis of water, wastewater, and soils for organic and inorganic compounds, as well as conducting field sampling services for a variety of regulatory programs. In an effort to prevent hazardous substances harmful to the environment from entering fresh water sources, EMT samples flows of water, wastewater, and storm water, for such harmful substances as lead, mercury, cyanide, and dozens of other organic and inorganic compounds.

OBJECTIVES OF THE POSITION:    

Under the direction of the organics manager and supervisor, the extraction team member performs a wide variety of tasks. The extractions team member will conduct the operation of lab equipment according to EMT’s standard operating procedures and protocols in a culture of safe action, honest and ethical behavior in all laboratory activities. The role will perform specific duties assigned by the organics supervisors to ensure that client service requests are met. As a team member, endeavor to complete their own assignments on time, and proactively assist other team members as need arises.

SPECIFIC DUTIES OF THE POSITION:

• Develop a deep understanding of the SOP’s; the underlying QC and analytical requirements for those procedures assigned.
• Support extraction department personnel to accomplish day to day work flow as assigned by organics supervisor.
• Responsible for quality of samples that are extracted.
• Ensure use of correct SOP and SOP sub-sections, as appropriate.
• Ensure on a daily basis each analyst knows details of procedure to be performed, including but not limited to spiking solutions and volumes, initial and final volumes, appropriate pH checks and adjustments.
• Communicate department issues and provide status reports to the Organics Manager and Supervisor.
• Maintain compliance of demonstration of capabilities (DOC) of extraction personnel.
• Coordinate the proper disposal of samples according to the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP).
• Prepare and properly label reagents and standards.
• Clean and maintain and keep in good working order any laboratory equipment and instrumentation (pH meters, pipettes, volumetric flasks etc.) assigned to you by your supervisor and team leader.
• Keep equipment and work area clean and organized.
• Monitor and order needed supplies for the department.
• Such other tasks as may be assigned from time to time consistent with the objectives of the position.

 PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS OF THE POSITION:

• Must be able to lift or move up to twenty-five (25) pounds using correct and safe lifting techniques.
• Must be able to work in a cold room/cooler for short periods of time.
• Must be able to wear all Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) required for the position.
• Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
• While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; stoop, kneel; talk or hear; and smell.

PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL CREDENTIALS:

• Bachelor’s degree with basic knowledge of chemistry a plus.
• Excellent computer skills and willingness to learn Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).
• Must be proficient in Microsoft: Excel.
• Excellent verbal and written communications skills.
• Self-directed, goal and outcome oriented.
• Have good interpersonal and teamwork skills.
