- Lead initiatives associated with critical habitat for Rice’s whales in the Gulf of Mexico.
- Develop drafts, facilitate reviews, and complete the final version of the Biological Report, incorporating evaluations and facilitating internal and external reviews.
- Provide technical support for ESA recovery and MMPA conservation activities for Rice’s whales, including synthesizing public comments and assisting with recovery priorities.
- Engage with proponents of restoration projects to assess impacts on marine mammals, participate in relevant meetings, and provide expertise on MMPA issues.
- Screen restoration projects for potential impacts on marine mammals, identify opportunities to minimize effects, and ensure proactive involvement in major projects.
- Maintain current knowledge of marine mammal species, their habitats, and threats in the Gulf of Mexico.
- Submit electronic monthly progress reports correlating cost incurred and level of effort expended with specific activities and accomplishments.
- Communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders, prepare and deliver presentations, and represent the organization at various events.
A minimum of 6 years' related experience leading to:
- Knowledge and/or experience with the Rice's Whale.
- Strong knowledge of the Endangered Species Act (ESA) and Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA) regulations.
- Experience in developing and implementing conservation and recovery plans for marine mammals.
- Proficiency in conducting literature searches, gathering and analyzing information, and writing reports in various styles (scientific and plain language).
- Ability to assess potential impacts to marine mammals from marine restoration and recovery activities.
- Familiarity with databases and graphics programs such as Word, Excel, Gmail, Google Docs, Endnote, and PowerPoint.
- Excellent communication skills, both oral and written, with the ability to engage with internal and external stakeholders.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks and projects simultaneously.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team, with a proactive approach to problem-solving.
- Willingness to travel as required for project meetings, presentations, and outreach activities.
