Overview

Join a small, dedicated team with the goals of driving accessibility innovation in ArcGIS software and products, making a difference in company culture, and supporting our diverse user communities to uplift all people, emphasizing those with disabilities.

In this unique and highly collaborative role, you will advocate for accessibility strategies across ArcGIS product groups and development teams, as you evangelize, reinforce, and incorporate accessibility best practices holistically across the company. Share your passion for the intersection of technology, user advocacy, and digital accessibility and help to enrich the community of GIS accessibility champions at Esri and beyond.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with web, desktop, and mobile ArcGIS product development and design teams to proactively identify and actively remediate accessibility issues
  • Evaluate and analyze various ArcGIS products using assistive technologies (manual and automated processes) to implement WCAG standards
  • Provide support for 3rd-party product accessibility evaluations conducted with accessibility consultants
  • Create or heavily contribute to product Accessibility Conformance Reports (ACRs), providing detail for product-specific accessibility features and conformance levels
  • Remain current on accessibility best practices and standards, and work iteratively to improve internal strategies, project tracking environments, and resource infrastructure
  • Communicate to external audiences about accessibility practices at Esri (present at Esri events, author blogs and articles, and create public accessibility resources and materials)
  • Engage with customers, partners, and international distributors on accessibility inquires, standards, and product requirements

Requirements

  • Practical experience with assistive technologies such as screen readers (e.g. JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver), screen magnifiers (e.g. ZoomText), and voice recognition tools (e.g. Dragon products)
  • Practical experience with accessibility best practices on at least one platform (e.g. web, desktop, mobile Android/iOS)
  • Familiarity with current accessibility standards and guidelines (e.g. WCAG, Revised Section 508, EN 301 549)
  • Practical and conceptual knowledge of web-based programming languages (HTML, CSS, JavaScript), and/or desktop software programming languages (C#, C, C , Python)
  • Confident in ability to communicate accessibility requirements and information across various stakeholder audiences (e.g., developers, product managers, end users, customers)
  • Bachelor's or master's in computer science, engineering, human-computer interaction, user experience, interaction design, applied social science, or a related field such as digital marketing, or comparable industry experience

Recommended Qualifications

  • Refined communication and presentation skills
  • Familiarity with GitHub for project and issue creation and tracking
  • Familiarity with Esri ArcGIS software and/or other GIS and mapping products
  • Familiarity with accessibility testing practices and manual/automated software evaluation
  • Experience with agile software development methodologies and commercial software delivery processes
  • Experience creating or contributing to Accessibility Conformance Reports (ACRs) and/or Voluntary Product Accessibility Templates (VPATs)
  • Experience with change management, emergent strategy, and/or internal advocacy for future team and program growth

Portfolio / Prior Work Submission

The candidate selection and interview process will incorporate a more detailed review of representative case studies, where you can show problem-solving on real-world accessibility projects. Please be prepared to demonstrate highlights of your accessibility work during the interview process.
