Port City Veterinary Referral Hospital is seeking a Hospital Services Manager – Emergency Room and Intensive Care Unit (ER/ICU) to help lead and grow our well-established 24/7 emergency and specialty veterinary hospital. This position will manage all operational aspects of our ER and ICU and serve as a key member of the Hospital’s leadership team, reporting to the Hospital Director. Port City’s ER and ICU departments include more than 10 full-time Emergency and Critical Care veterinarians, 3 Supervisors, and more than 30 nursing and support staff. This position requires on-site work in our hospital in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.

Our Hospital Services Manager – ER/ICU will have the opportunity to put her/his outstanding leadership skills to great use with one of the most prestigious specialty veterinary hospitals in New England. This position offers the chance to make an immediate and lasting impact on staff, clients, and patients, while at the same time being part of our national network of veterinary hospitals across the country.
The base salary range for this full-time position is $80k - $100k annually. Our salary ranges are primarily determined by role, level, and location. The range provided for each job posting reflects the minimum and maximum target salaries for the position. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.
While the schedule for this role is somewhat flexible, while managing a 24/7 department, occasional night and weekend coverage will be expected.
The responsibilities of the Hospital Services Manager – ER/ICU include:
People Management
- Demonstrate exceptional Leadership skills throughout the employment lifecycle with the ability to manage a diverse workplace environment and ensure all employees are provided the opportunity for growth and development.
- Act as the hiring manager for positions within the assigned departments and work with Talent Acquisition to recruit and hire outstanding candidates, while managing labor against budget.
- Set performance standards and monitor, assess, review and evaluate employee performance against established standards. Recommend promotions, awards, and corrective actions as needed.
- Manage complex relationships and resolve misunderstandings or conflicts that may surface between departments in the Hospital or within individual departments.
- Work with department Supervisors to develop staff schedules while ensuring proper cost controls.
- Conduct regular staff meetings and prepare agendas.
Operational Excellence
- Assess and optimize administrative and operational workflows within the departments, utilizing a continuous process improvement mindset.
- Develop a culture of customer service excellence through mentorship, training, and deliberate culture change initiatives.
- Support employees in their pursuit of clinical excellence in conjunction with Hospital’s Learning & Development resources.
- Manage projects, as assigned, by Hospital leadership.
Education, Skills and Experience:
- Ideal candidates will have a Bachelor’s degree and/or significant leadership experience.
- Veterinary industry experience is not required but may be a benefit. A comfort level working within a clinical setting will be necessary.
- Strong interpersonal skills, the ability to develop employees, be a problem solver, outstanding communicator, and have the ability to maintain a positive working atmosphere that supports an exceptional client experience.
- Previous experience in hands-on hospital administration or retail experience may help a candidate to be successful in this role.
