As a Staff Data Scientist, you will become an integral part of a dynamic, diverse, and top-tier team comprising data scientists, engineers, and analysts. Together, we harness the power of big and small data from our extensive customer and commercial fleets, manufacturing processes, and service operations to uncover insights and predict the performance and reliability of our cutting-edge products globally. As a key player in our team, you will be instrumental in developing advanced machine learning-based prognostics models that leverage the wealth of data collected from millions of miles of vehicle telemetry.
Responsibilities
Salary Range California-Based Applicants: $182,000 -$232,000 (actual compensation will be determined based on experience, and other factors permitted by law).
Benefits Summary: Rivian provides robust medical/Rx, dental and vision insurance packages for full-time employees, their spouse or domestic partner, and children up to age 26. Coverage is effective on the first day of employment, and Rivian covers most of the premiums.

Responsibilities
- Work closely with extensive vehicle telemetry data to provide valuable insights into the reliability and performance of our different products.
- Develop statistical and machine learning models for the practical purpose of predicting and forecasting field failures, contributing to our commitment to quality and safety.
- Take the lead in implementing ML-based Prognostics and Health Management to enhance preventative maintenance strategies, ensuring the longevity and sustainability of our products.
- Engage in methodical research of algorithms, focusing on prototyping, validation, and iterative improvement, all while maintaining a practical approach to technological advancements.
- Serve as a respected technical authority within the organization, offering pragmatic guidance on current and future technology decisions, always aligned with our company's goals.
- Apply a deep understanding of the business and operational aspects of technology choices, ensuring a balanced approach that meets our company's needs efficiently.
- Foster collaboration among your engineering peers by creating well-structured, adaptable designs and code that promote teamwork and practical solutions.
- Demonstrate your ability to facilitate consensus during complex technical discussions, ensuring that we maintain a productive and cooperative working environment.
- B.S. or M.S. in engineering, math, physics, computer science or other quantitative discipline
- 5 years of industry experience in a data science or software engineering role or Ph.D.
- Expert level knowledge totaling 5 years of experience with Python and Apache Spark
- Extensive understanding of statistical and machine learning concepts
- Capable of working in a fast-paced and constantly changing development environment
- Outstanding team player with great communication skills that can build team consensus
- Passionately motivated to take ideas from development validation to a verified product
- Self-motivated: Demonstrated ability to set direction and guide the team towards it
- Hands-on approach: Proactively identifies and fills in gaps where needed and make things happen
- Experience in software-defined vehicles or similarly complex systems
- Experience in the field of prognostics or field reliability engineering
- Experience with cloud infrastructure such as AWS/GCP with terraform
