Job Description: Outreach Family Advocate- Valparaiso, Indiana
The focus of the Outreach Family Advocate-Southern Indiana is to provide outreach within the community and to work with Participants. Ultimately the main goal is to guide participants to self-sufficiency as well as to support the mission and work of Family Scholar House, Inc.
70% Provide outreach within the community to recruit participants for Family Scholar House. Provide Family Support Services and Academic coaching services to Family Scholar House participants including connection to government and private programs and benefits to which they may be entitled, development of life skills necessary for self-sufficiency, and referral to supportive services as needed for crisis intervention along with advising students concerning academic and career choices, goals, and objectives. Sessions with participants may include support for enhanced family unity, parenting and homemaking skills, personal goal setting, financial management, family health and safety information, supportive services for crisis management, connection to tutoring opportunities, scholarship resources in the community, connection to financial aid, etc Organize informational sessions, social and recreational activities for Family Scholar House participants and families to support the goals of academic advising and family support.
15% Maintain knowledge of community social service resources including those that provide Food Stamps, TANF, Child Support, subsidized housing programs, emergency financial assistance, utility bill assistance and counseling for the benefit of Family Scholar House participants. As well as knowledge of community educational resources including the admissions, financial aid, registration, and related academic processes at the institutions attended by participants. Attend relevant trainings to acquire new skills, Share information about Family Scholar House and support referral relationships with the community through presentations, tabling events and informational sessions with other social service organizations. Attend Community meetings as needed.
10% Maintain accurate and up-to-date academic and case management records and notes on all Family Scholar House participants and families and provide reports culled from this information to share with the Chief Learning Officer, Chief Operating Officer , President & CEO, Family Scholar House staff, the Program Committee, and the Board of Directors
5% Other duties as assigned.
Position Requirements
Baccalaureate degree in Human Services, Social Work, Sociology, Guidance and Counseling, or a closely related field. Master’s degree preferred.
Valid Driver’s license
Previous experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Access type databases.
Knowledge of and ability to utilize the Internet and e-mail.
Good interpersonal and communication skills and strong organizational skills.
