Job Title: Gunsmith I

Job Purpose:

To provide professional Gunsmith services in support of the Federal Service Industry Training Divisions and Defensive Systems Units.

Mission to provide Gunsmith services to repair, rebuild, maintain, refinish, machine, inventory, and secure service issued weapons, federally approved Personally Owned Weapons (POW), Hostage Rescue Team (HRT) / Critical Incident Response Group (CIRG) / National Tactical Training Unit (NTTU) weapons and special project efforts to include other weapon sets throughout the Federal Service Industry.

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Inspect weapons and identify any mechanical problems.
  • Rebuild or refinishing firearms including complete weapon disassembly, sandblasting, and refinishing.
  • Safely inspect, disassemble, and perform weapon inspections and maintenance in a high- volume environment.
  • Perform repetitious tasks and assignments and meet established deadlines.
  • Support inventories of firearms and related material.
  • Assist in the shipping and receiving of weapons and supplies.
  • Record, package, and secure weapons for lawful destruction and assist service personnel during the destruction process.
  • Perform special projects requiring the manufacturing or alteration of specialized weapon platforms.
  • Log-in and secure weapons received during in- service training and assist personnel with weapon related issues, problems, questions, and concerns.

Required Qualifications:

  • United States citizen.
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Active Top Secret Security Clearance or capable of obtaining one.
  • Completion of an accredited gunsmith training program.
  • Must have a valid certification as a Glock armorer. Remington 870 Shotgun armorer, and/or Colt Pattern Carbine armorer certification preferred.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of firearms repair and maintenance procedures.
  • Demonstrate thorough knowledge of federally issued or approved Glock pistols; such knowledge must include operating controls, disassembly and assembly, safety systems, and safe handling methods, as well as the ability to diagnose malfunctions and other functional problems. Demonstrated ability must include the process for refurbishing these pistols, including refinishing, and restoring to like-new mechanical condition.
  • Ability to use computers, including the preparation of documents and inputting data.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office.
  • Demonstrate substantial knowledge (which includes the ability to disassemble and perform all repairs without additional guidance or instruction) of firearms repair and maintenance procedures for the Glock pistol, Remington 870 Shotgun, and Colt pattern carbine.
  • Demonstrate thorough knowledge of federal shoulder fired weapons, including Colt pattern carbines, and Remington Model 870 shotguns. Demonstrated knowledge must include the process for rebuilding these firearms from a stripped receiver.

Working condition:

  • Inside and outside ranges in variable inclement weather.
  • Long workdays.
  • Intermittent noise between 140db to 165db.
  • Prolonged periods of standing.

  • Vision: required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
