What are the responsibilities and job description for the Packaging Tech position at Faribault Foods, Inc.?

SUMMARY: Ensure safe and efficient operation of various packaging equipment and related material handling systems to include the palletizer, depalletizer, labeler, tray former, stretch wrapper, pallet labeler, and associated conveyors. Ensure compliance with all quality standards of finished product. Operate packaging equipment to permit high rates of efficiency and a safe working environment. Operational duties also include proper sanitation, sterilization, equipment C.I.P. and proper cleanliness of the workstation. Participate as a Team Member of their assigned Business Unit. Direction is provided by the Department Manager, Supervisor or Lead who coordinates the activities of Team members involved in the packaging of product for their assigned Business Unit. The Business Unit goals are consistent with company goals and business unit Key Performance Indicators (KPI's) to include safety, quality, efficiency, productivity and customer service.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Responsible for the safe and efficient operation and maintenance of assigned equipment on the packaging line. Maintain proper safety conditions of equipment and of Company assets.
  • Partner with Quality Assurance, executing and supporting all Quality programs that ensure the production of Safe, Quality Foods.
  • Ensure Food Safety and Quality is maintained to company standards at all times.
  • Complete assigned paperwork daily. Complete all documentation associated with production and change-overs. Maintain accurate records and logs as required.
  • Perform line observations, calculate downtime, perform safety and quality checks, quality audits, complete maintenance work orders and take action and make recommendations based on these results.
  • Responsible as replacement operator to cover shift during vacation time, personal time, or other time away from work following the crewing procedures.
  • Be an active participant in Business Unit team meetings and other Plant meetings by communicating timely and pertinent data when appropriate, and active involvement in analyzing, recommending, and implementing solutions to problems within the Business Unit and the Plant.
  • Ensure a smooth shift change transition (i.e., communicate problems/issues regarding operating equipment, upcoming quantity/product changes, review quality inspections, etc.)
  • Train new employees and co-workers.
  • Perform basic preventative maintenance tasks and corrective work orders, and work with other support personnel when operational problems occur. Provide data and information to support personnel, such as maintenance, to facilitate the effectiveness of their performance.
  • Identify and correct equipment problems to maximize production efficiencies, and report potential equipment problems to maintenance.
  • Comply with area Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), Quality Assurance Parameters (QAPs), Good Manufacturing Process (GMPs) Procedures, and Safe Quality Food (SQF) Standards. Be knowledgeable in all required Quality Assurance checks and in HACCP related items.
  • Clean and sanitize machines to meet legal and quality standards. Maintain a clean, organized work area respecting GMP's.
  • Ensure that job operations maintain or improve product quality. Stop and correct job operation if product quality is affected negatively.
  • Rotate positions with other Packaging Team Members. Cross-train and achieve equipment operation certifications on all equipment within the Business Unit.
  • Maintain OSHA Certified Forklift License (if applicable).
  • Work daily overtime and weekends as required.
  • Complies with all company policies and procedures and adhering to company standards.
  • Able to meet all attendance requirements in accordance with Company’s Attendance Policy.
  • Able to lift and carry up to 65lbs consistently. Able to lift up to 100 pounds occasionally, with assistance.
  • Effectively cooperate with direct supervision as well as maintain professional and cooperative relationships across all levels within the Company.

LISTENING: Able to listen to a presentation on checklists of plant processes. Retells and responds to questions or completes a chart. Able to identify main idea, details and transition points when listening to a presentation.

DOCUMENT USE: Able to explain how something works based on a text; relates the sequence of steps or stages in a cycle or process described in the text. Able to access, locate and compare/contrast 2-3 pieces of information in a reference source.

READING SKILLS are the ability to explain how something works based on text which relates the sequence of steps or stages in a cycle or process described in the text. Employees must be able to use information from a timeline/schedule chart to solve a simple scheduling problem.

WRITING APTITUDE to convey business messages as written notes to pass on routine information, make requests, or respond to recommendations and warnings. Ability to reproduce information received orally or visually and can take simple notes from short oral presentations or from reference materials.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS are the ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals. Mathematical skills also include the ability to perform the above operations using units of American measurement, weight, and volume measurements. Employee must be able to accurately record and chart results and operate a calculator to determine sums, averages, and ranges.

REASONING ABILITY is the process to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations by thinking about something in a logical way in order to form a conclusion or judgment.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS are the physical demands described here are representatives of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk, hear, stand, walk, reach, bend, stoop and climb stairs; uses hands to operate controls and inspect product. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and color vision. Must frequently lift and/or move up to 65 pounds.
