ABOUT THE FAUQUIER TIMES AND THE PRINCE WILLIAM TIMES
The Digital Editor will be responsible for the digital content of The Fauquier Times and The Prince William Times,weekly newspapers that cover two distinct counties located in the southern part of Northern Virginia.
Fauquier is a county with a large rural footprint and about 70,000 residents. The county seat, Warrenton, is the county’s largest town.
The Prince William Times serves 480,000 residents. The population is much more diverse and the service area includes two cities, Manassas and Manassas Park.
Although the two counties are adjacent and some stories are shared between the papers, the focus of each website is unique to its coverage area.
ESSENTIAL PURPOSE OF THIS POSITION
As the newsroom staff member responsible for digital strategy and for day-to-day management of all digital content including web and email products, the Digital Editor must thrive in a breaking-news culture.
The Digital Editor curates, edits and writes social media posts. They also produce interactive features, galleries and video – that are timely, compelling and drive audience engagement.
The job requires solid news judgment, strong editing and headline-writing skills and familiarity with SEO and site analytics. Strong candidates will have the ability to join the highest standards for content with ambitious traffic and engagement and revenue objectives.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
· Generates and executes digital story ideas.
· Sets/executes daily strategy to maximize reader engagement with daily newsletters.
· In consultation with the managing editors of both newspapers, ensures the newsroom publishes a steady stream of original content throughout the day and robust/fresh content to lead newsletter emails.
· Tracks metrics and measures engagement with the goal of growing the subscriber and advertising base and building engagement among disparate age groups.
· Manages main social media feeds (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, TikTok) with goal of extending the Times newspapers’ brand and building audience engagement.
· Collaborates with managing editors to ensure print features and related content are maximized online, planning ahead and taking into account premium content/page view considerations.
· Works with editors and reporters to plan content and features for online treatment.
· Helps staff identify and deploy tactics to meet traffic and engagement goals.
· Works cooperatively and collaboratively with all colleagues and professionally with sources.
REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND SKILLS
· Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience
· 4-5 years of experience in online news operation and use of content management systems
· Experience in the analysis of audience metrics and proven ability to maximize audience
· Expertise in social media platforms
· Strong headline writing and copy-editing skills
· Familiarity with AP Style
· SEO experience
· Video production experience
· Demonstrated use of databases to build interactive elements and features
· Html skills a plus
WORKING CONDITIONS
Flexible office/remote work environment. Ability to work flexible work schedules, including nights, weekends and holidays, as needed.
