The R&D Manager is responsible for researching, developing, formulating, and testing topical skin care products in the cosmetic and over-the-counter drug categories. Examples of formulas in this area are deodorants, antiperspirants, lip balms, and lotions. This person will research emerging trends and marketed brands, evaluate current and new cosmetic ingredients and experiment with laboratory scale batches of cosmetic formulas to achieve desired characteristics such as color, texture, appearance, fragrance, application and required specifications such as active ingredient levels for sunscreens and skin protectants.
Review current industry research about skincare lotions, deodorants, sunscreens, lip balms, deodorants, etc.
Review consumer products on the market and gather information on how to incorporate product benefits into new product designs
Evaluate and adjust ingredient levels to achieve formula and aesthetic objectives
Manage R&D Laboratory Technicians and operation
Provide tactical guidance for design control, process validations and release criteria for new product introductions
Test prototypes for quality and safety
Compound bench samples of cosmetic formulas and fill into containers for evaluation
Run stability tests on new formulas
Monitor, test and inspect products to make certain they meet specified standards
Interact with Process Engineering to ensure that the transfer of new products to Production is in accordance with approved data and that quality criteria are established
Bachelor of Science degree, preferably chemistry
Must have minimum of 5 years R&D laboratory and product development experience in a cosmetic manufacturing environment
Must have working knowledge of WORD and EXCEL
Requires extensive knowledge of cosmetic laboratory formulation practices such as researching formula chemistry, batch monitoring and stability studies
Requires evaluation of brand products for aesthetics and ingredient trends and criteria that could be used in new formulas
Must possess good communication skills
Must be able to prioritize and plan work activities, using time efficiently
