Job Summary
Manages a group of design engineers/engineering technicians responsible for the design and engineering of manual and automated material handling package sort systems for hubs and stations across the FedEx Ground network through both in-house and vendor engineering resources. Oversees and manages a group of engineers and design engineering technicians responsible for conceptualization and development of facility designs for hubs and stations (e.g., facility design and drawing, sites, building, offices, hubs, built-to-suit, expansion, parking projects, and other facility related items). Familiar with a variety of the field's concepts, practices, and procedures. Relies on extensive experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. Performs a variety of tasks. Leads and directs the work of others.
Essential Functions
• Management responsibilities include, but are not limited to hiring, terminations, coaching, skills development, recognition and rewards, performance management and staff productivity. • Plans, organizes, staffs, directs and controls the day-to-day operations of the department; develops and implements policies and programs as necessary. • Develops and manages the department budget; ensures compliance and addresses variances and other budget concerns. • Oversees and reviews project material handling system designs, engineering, drawings, and specifications. • Manages the engineering and design performance of material handling and design engineering vendors. • Coordinates and participates in meetings with other support departments (e.g. Information Technology (IT), Network & Facility Planning, Material Handling Project Engineering, and Operations Engineering) regarding material handling system designs, technology implementations, and project scheduling. • Develops and manages the department budget; ensures compliance and addresses variances and other budget concerns. • Oversees the development of architecture, layout, and site designs of the physical facilities. • Oversees and ensures that facility designs comply with applicable building codes and FedEx Ground (FXG) design standards and requirements. • Oversees planning and leading multiple projects and design reviews using internal and external resources, with cross-functional teams. • Identifies problems or inefficiencies with current buildings or plants; modifies or adjusts existing facility blueprints to resolve recurring building or plant failures; recommends new facility design specifications. • Demonstrates basic knowledge of finance and accounting theory and principles.
Minimum Education
• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Mechanical Engineering, Architecture, Civil or related field required; Master’s degree in Business preferred.
Minimum Experience
• Eight (8) years’ experience required in technical or related area.
Required Skills, Abilities and / or Licensure
• Knowledge of AutoCAD software. • Software skills, including use of Microsoft Office software and web-based applications. • Verbal and written communication skills necessary to communicate with all levels of management. • Presentation skills necessary to facilitate training and/or deliver informational sessions to groups and/or individuals. • Ability to effectively provide instruction on process and practice within the department. • Time management and organizational skills necessary to manage multiple projects, appropriately prioritize workload, plan for resources to meet deadlines and goals, and respond to day-to-day functional needs. • Ability to inspire a shared vision and empower and motivate a team.
