What are the responsibilities and job description for the PQC Spectroscopy Intern position at FHI 360?
FHI 360 has an exciting internship opportunity for a student interested in growing their skills within the international development sector. Under close supervision, an Intern will perform entry level professional duties which will provide the opportunity for professional training in various functional areas throughout the organization. Internship assignments serve to offer practical experience and broad exposure to a global nonprofit development organization.
This project will require the development of spectroscopy rollout training packages with handheld spectrometers that will be used in future field testing of rapid screening methods for finished pharmaceutical products and medical devices. This will require the preparation of training videos, presentation materials, and the use of in-house developed software. Additionally, data analysis and possibly collection of isoniazid tablets with handheld and benchtop diffuse reflectance spectrometers as well as a portable Raman spectrometer may be necessary. May require organizing and creation of data analysis figures and tables for professional meetings / manuscripts.
This is a paid internship with a flexible schedule based on project needs.
Anticipated Duration: Summer 2023: May - August 2023
Hours: 30 - 40 hours per week
Pay Rate: $17.00/hour
Location: Durham, NC (Hybrid of remote office and in-person environments)
Skills Gained and Learning Opportunities:
- Practical experience working in a quality compliance laboratory with finished pharmaceuticals.
- Gain an understanding of analytical chemistry and laboratory operations using diffuse reflectance and Raman spectrometers.
- Data management and presentation skills by providing clear and creative charts to model and summarize spectroscopy data.
- Experience working with an inter-disciplinary product development team and attending group meetings.
- Serve as a sounding board for development of spectroscopy training packages and data analytics.
- Will gain experience in researching topics as assigned, specifically peer-reviewed literature searches.
- Experience with maintaining accurate experimental details and results in lab notebooks and SharePoint.
- Experience with data science methodologies.
Anticipated Project(s) and Assignment Details:
The intern may contribute to various team or project activities under the direction of their supervisor in the following ways:
- Contribute to research or project activities as assigned by supervisor
- Conduct peer-reviewed literature searches
- Conduct desk reviews, landscape analyses and/or secondary data analyses
- Organize and participate in team meetings and country calls (e.g., contributing to scientific discussions and provide project updates)
- Support business development efforts, including conducting background research on donors, programs, and strategies and developing summaries that highlight the department's capabilities
- Contribute to the distribution of project knowledge, which may include internal reports, scientific conference presentations, and peer-reviewed manuscript preparation
- Assist with project-related administrative tasks, as needed
Qualifications and Competencies:
- Currently enrolled in a degree program at a college or university in a related field of study or within one year of graduation date: Pharmaceutical Sciences
- Demonstrated interest in related subject area through studies, work experience, and/or personal travel
- Energetic and eager to tackle new projects and ideas
- Strong writing and research skills
- Articulate, professional, and able to communicate in a clear, positive manner
- Must be able to read, write, and speak fluent English
