The Division
With more than $610 billion in assets under management, Fidelity Asset Management Solutions (FAMS) is a leading provider of asset allocation solutions for institutional clients. The range of investment solutions includes active allocation strategies, custom solutions and target date funds.
The Position
The ESG Strategist is responsible for helping build the ESG investment infrastructure across Fidelity and playing a meaningful external role representing Fidelity’s Sustainable Investing Platform to institutional and other key clients in the marketplace. The ESG Strategist will serve as an integrated member of the investment management team, with a focus on partnerships with key Fidelity distribution businesses. This role will reside within the Institutional Portfolio Management (IPM) Team.
The internal focus will be aimed at helping build Fidelity’s ESG investment and marketing infrastructure by partnering with investment management, marketing and product teams. The ESG Strategist will focus on delivering strategic marketplace insights into the investment management organization, including ongoing competitor perspectives and industry trends as well as providing leadership on investment management content to Fidelity's distribution and product management organizations. The role will also require building strong relationships with key investment professionals across the organization.
Externally, the ESG Strategist will play an influential role in reinforcing the identity of Fidelity's Sustainable Investing Platform in the marketplace and contributing to investment priorities and practices within Asset Management. The ESG Strategist will be located in Boston and will focus on the broader ESG platform, with emphasis on the equity-based sustainable strategies, including our thematic sustainable funds.
Responsibilities
IPM Organizational Structure
The ESG Strategist is a strong partner of the investment team and is fully embedded within the portfolio management team. This level of integration is critical to provide:
Refined transparency and understanding of the investment process and strategies
An effective environment for investment solution discussions and decision-making
Marketplace credibility to most effectively represent Fidelity’s Sustainable Investing Platform and overall Fidelity organization
Ongoing feedback on marketplace perspectives, developments and competitor trends
Investment Knowledge
The ESG Strategist will maintain a comprehensive understanding of relevant investment strategies, including:
Detailed understanding of the evolving sustainable investing industry, including ESG taxonomy, industry and regulatory trends, investment nuances, etc.
Comprehensive and ongoing understanding of strategy outlook, portfolio positioning and performance attribution of key sustainable equity and thematic strategies
Ongoing understanding of characteristics and developments across all relevant financial markets and competitor trends
Fidelity Distribution Partnerships
The ESG Strategist will be a principal conduit for the Division and its strategies in support of Fidelity's multiple distribution businesses. The ESG Strategist will be required to:
Build, maintain and strengthen partnerships across all relevant distribution businesses to broaden investment understanding and overall awareness of competitive strengths
Serve as primary investment contact for clients, with a focus on providing transparency with respect to investment philosophy, process, strategy and performance
Engage advisors, consultants and gatekeepers to provide investment transparency and to build organizational awareness
Focus on investment and product education as well as thought leadership initiatives to all business partners
Fidelity Product Management Partnership
The ESG Strategist will be a principal conduit for the Division and its strategies to support the product management group within the asset management organization. The ESG Strategist will be required to:
Provide leadership and oversight for the maintenance of comprehensive marketplace and competitor analysis, with a focus on differentiating competitor investment process, investment performance and distribution strategies
Provide insight and counsel for investment solution enhancement and development initiatives
Oversee quality and integrity of client and market-facing investment communications
Qualifications
Experience/Education
5-10 years of investment industry experience required; investment management experience preferred
Successful track record of direct representation of investment management strategies to broad spectrum of institutional constituencies required
Working knowledge of sustainable and ESG investment content
Minimum 5 years direct portfolio management experience preferred
CFA designation preferred
CFA Institute Certificate in ESG Investing (or willingness to take)
Advanced business degree preferred
Skills and Knowledge
Highly effective and consistent written and verbal communication capabilities
Passion for ESG investing and sustainability
Ability to successfully articulate detailed mechanics of investment process and sustainable investing
Successful track record of investment presentation creation and delivery to broad spectrum of institutional constituencies
Passion for financial markets, investment process and provision of effective investment solutions
Comfort and ability to work in a highly collaborative environment, with a frequent focus on gaining consensus across a broad spectrum of investment management, distribution, product management and senior management constituents
Capability to balance resolve and temperament in response to pursuing opportunity through organizational structure
Ability to travel frequently, with an overall expectation on average of 1-2 days per week
