SUMMARY/OBJECTIVE
A Level B Maintenance Technician is the full journey level class within the Fleet Mechanic series. This class is distinguished from the Maintenance Technician Level A by the assignment of the full range of duties assigned and the ability to work in the absence of supervision on an on-call basis. Employees at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies within the work unit. Positions in this class are flexibly staffed and are normally filled by advancement from the C Tech Level.
QUALIFICATIONS
The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Candidates should have working knowledge of TIG, MIG, Plasma, and Torching welding. He/she would also have conceptual knowledge of schematics and blueprints.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBLITIES
- Performs work as outlined on repair order with efficiency and accuracy, in accordance with manufacturer standards
- Troubleshoots various systems, including electrical, drive train, hydraulic, HVAC, brake, engine, and suspension
- Identifies needed repairs and perform corrective action
- Writes on the repair order an accurate, clear, and detailed description of the cause of failure and the repair procedure(s) performed. Documents all work performed and recommended on the repair order
- Saves and tags parts of the job if under warranty or if requested by the customer
- Uses diagnostic equipment to detect and isolate faults and interpret test results
- Reads written fault description on repair order and determines the most efficient repair procedure
- Communicates with Department Supervisor immediately if additional work is needed, if work outlined is not needed, or if repairs cannot be completed within the promised time
- Obtains supervisor permission to complete diagnosed repairs and/or add additional repairs
- Tests equipment following completion of repairs to ensure proper operation (Commercial driver’s license required if vehicle is 26,000 lbs GVWR)
- Tracks and charges clocked hours to the proper corresponding repair order
- Assists other technicians with repair procedures as needed
- Participates in manufacturer-sponsored training programs, schools, and events, as directed by Department Supervisor
- Keeps abreast of manufacturer technical bulletins
- Keeps shop area neat and clean
- Maintains and is accountable for assigned tools and manuals. Returns them to the proper place and in the same condition as they were received as soon as work is completed
- Operates all tools and equipment in a safe manner
- Reports any safety issues immediately to management

- Ability to quickly move your hand, your hand together with your arm, or your two hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble objects
- Ability to see details at close range (within a few feet of the observer)
- Solid understanding of DOT regulations around commercial vehicle requirements
- Extensive experience in working on commercial trucks, engines, and transmissions
- Strong background with hydraulic systems
PERFORMANCE MEASUREMENTS
- Proficiency (85%)
- Level of Re-Work (Target <2% time)
- Average RO Turnaround time (<2 days for trucks/trailers/equipment, <4 days for fabrication)
WORKING CONDITIONS
This position will be working indoors and outdoors in a shop environment. If travel is required, the normal automobile and air travel hazards will apply.
- Include physical demands – standing, lifting, other expectations or occasional tasks.
- Frequent exposure to Noise, Vibration, Dust, Dirt, and Fumes from diesel and gas engine
- Occasional exposure to weather/seasonal temperature extremes
REQUIRED LICENSES, CERTIFICATES AND EDUCATION
- High School diploma or GED preferred.
- Valid driver’s license with no major violations, Commercial Driver’s License preferred
- Personal tool inventory to allow for the completion of job duties and assignments
- Appropriate experience may substitute.
- Minimum 2 years of working on diesel, industrial, and/or hydraulic equipment
