What are the responsibilities and job description for the Outdoor Recreation Coordinator (Paddlesport) position at Five Rivers MetroParks?
Develops and presents a variety of outdoor recreation programming, activities, and events in assigned areas. Supervises Program Specialist and other support staff. Advocates for assigned areas in the community on behalf of Five Rivers MetroParks (FRMP). Collaborates within the agency to develop outdoor recreation facilities.

Reasonable accommodations are made as required for persons with disabilities as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act. * Develops the outdoor recreation strategy, programming/event plan, and cost recovery plan, for the assigned subject area, including classes, workshops, demonstrations, and special events.
* Prepares and presents outdoor recreation programming/events for assigned subject area which includes direct instruction and public engagement in classroom and field settings. Ensures facility bookings, program description input, qualified and adequate program staffing, lesson plans, programming presentations, equipment staging, and other preparatory duties for outdoor recreation programming, events, and activities.
* Supports outdoor recreation programming/events outside of assigned subject area, which includes direct instruction and public engagement in classroom and field settings.
* Evaluates and manages risk for programming, services, contractors; and makes modifications to mitigate risk as needed.
* Advocates for assigned subject area in the community. Develops and conducts outreach and speakers bureau opportunities. Builds partnerships and participates in community level efforts to increase community awareness, support, action, and participation. Represents FRMP on various volunteer committees and councils to generate and maintain interest and support in area of focus. Makes presentations in the community. Maintains relationships in the community with agencies, organizations, retailers, clubs, and other entities concerned with the assigned subject area.
* Works with the Philanthropy staff to identify alternative funding including grant requests, partnerships, sponsorships, and identification of other funding sources.
* Recruits, coordinates, and evaluates program providers, including staff, volunteers, partners, and contractors. Monitors contracts of program providers. Ensures all staff, volunteers, partners, and contractors who deliver programming are adequately trained, certified, and qualified. Provides training and ensures programs comply with quality standards.
* Conducts program evaluations and determines changes to program content and delivery, as needed, to meet program performance indicators and department and agency strategy.
* Supports marketing and promotional efforts for programming, special events and facilities including signage, web updates, event program content review for advertising, media appearances, populate social media posts, create e-mail newsletters, and facilitate distribution of print materials.
*Makes recommendations for development of annual budget. Monitors expenditures spent for programming to ensure compliance with approved budget and achieves cost recovery targets.
*Manages outdoor recreation equipment inventory and maintains general upkeep in assigned area of responsibility.
* Works with the appropriate staff in the development and ongoing consistency of outdoor recreation facilities, access, safety, and intended user experience in the area of responsibility.
* Maintains various records and reports including monthly reports, cost of service reports, work plans, and other records and reports.
* Maintains confidentiality of confidential or sensitive records and information.
*Works assigned schedule, exhibits regular and punctual attendance and works outside of normal schedule as required.
* Have personal experience in outdoor adventure activities. Maintain competency and train support staff in project management, industry best practices, building and maintaining contractor and community relationships and special event specific risk management.
* Recruit and train volunteers in coordination with Volunteer Services and assist in the recruitment and contracting of athletes and other support for your area of responsibility.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
Directly supervises assigned staff, volunteers, and contractual instructors. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with FRMP policies and applicable laws, and delegated authority. Responsibilities include participating in, and making recommendations pertaining to the selection, discipline of employees, and other personnel decisions. Plans and delegates work assignments, trains employees, provides guidance, resolves work issues, and ensures work complies with policy and performance standards.

* Bachelor’s degree in outdoor recreation, park and recreation management, outdoor education or related field, and two years’ experience in outdoor recreation education, program coordination, including supervision of others.
* Willingness and ability to work evenings, weekends, and holidays, as required.
* Relative experience in outdoor adventure activities such as flatwater or whitewater kayaking/canoeing/stand up paddleboarding, road and/or mountain biking, backpacking, rock climbing, and fly fishing. Outdoor coping skills including wilderness medicine, map and compass navigation, and trip planning.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Valid Drivers' License which meets FRMP insurance carrier guidelines
Within one year of employment: First Aid, CPR, and AED.
The following are preferred certifications and timelines to obtain them based on need:
Paddlesports:
- American Canoe Association Instructor Level 3: River Kayaking, Instructor Level 3: River Safety & Rescue (prefer acquisition within two years of employment).
- American Canoe Association Instructor Level 1: Introduction to Stand Up Paddleboarding, Wilderness First Responder, Leave No Trace Trainer (prefer acquisition within two years of employment).
- American Canoe Association Adaptive Kayak Endorsement and Kayak Rolling Endorsement (prefer acquisition within three years of employment).
Candidates must successfully complete a background check and drug screening test prior to employment.
