Reports to: Pathology Supervisor
Job Summary: The Histology Assistant has primary responsibility in performing pre-analytical duties.
Strong computer skills a must. Seeking someone detail oriented and interested in working in health care! Minimum of two years experience in a similar role preferred.

Essential Functions of the Position:
- Specimen preparation and slide send out.
- Accessions specimens and verifies patients insurance.
- Collects specimens from physicians and surgery centers.
- Prints cassettes with corresponding accession numbers for specimens.
- Prints and labels slides following laboratory protocol.
- Prints reports as needed.
- Includes patient insurance information when required.
- Matches reports to slides.
- Sends slides to correct Pathologist.
- Quantity/Timeliness of work that produces optimal productivity
- Performing tasks with minimal errors.
- Understands and has the know how to perform assigned tasks.
- Ability to master and understand new work routines in this area.
- Degree and willingness to put forth in performing these tasks.
- Performs maintenance on laboratory equipment.
- Operates all laboratory instruments in a knowledgeable and efficient manner.
- Maintenance performed and documented.
- Recognizes instrument problems and takes action making corrections and documenting machines error messages.
- Disposes of reagents and biohazard waste properly.
- Adheres to FMC's OSHA plans.

- Posts charges, distributes and scans reports.
- Scans reports daily.
- Delivers reports daily.
- Sends reports to correct physicians.
- Faxes reports ASAP when requested.
- Matches pathology reports and requisitions for billing.
- Verifies patient information before posting charges.
- Uses appropriate insurance for each charge.
- Applies correct diagnosis code for charges.
- Fills in each screen completely and correctly.
- Logs off Intergy and Citrix and out of the computer before leaving
- Quantity/Timeliness of work that produces optimal productivity

- Computer Utilization
- Operates computer systems efficiently, both Intergy and Citrix.
- Knows how to print patient demographic sheets and insurance cards
- Follows laboratory protocol before releasing patient information.
- Adheres to FMC's privacy and security standards.
- Faxes reports correctly and shreds patient information as required.
- Can load insurances into Intergy and set proper coverage
- Create requisitions for Labcorp, Quest, for specimen send out.
- Can perform Result retrieval and transmissions
- Able to print billing report or worklists
- Quantity/Timeliness of work that produces optimal productivity
- Performing tasks with minimal errors.

- Courier duties
- Knows courier route.
- Follows protocol when receiving specimens, including signing specimens out in log books at each location.
- Follows courier "map" with destinations and times.
- Informs appropriate people when coverage is needed. Is very specific with details of what needs to be covered.
